Forecast models changing now have her slightly more west than the past 24 hours.

If they change it more towards the Bay, I may evacuate to Bristol, TN for the weekend:D

As of 5:00, it shows still off the coast of NC, with only two of the 11 models show it even making landfall. And then all of the 11 models show it off shore until it hits NY or Boston.

Take a deep breath breath Andy, no need for panic.

Norcross says expect a more westerly path in the next update which is bad news for me and real bad news for you and for New York City... could save Boston though.

No need to panic but it looks like we'll get hit. Even a Cat 1 will mean big trouble. Trees are full of leaves, wet leaves act like a big sail and topple trees taking out power lines.
Bob hit us 20 years ago late in August and it was a mess.

Going to go pull my friends boat in a bit and avoid the rush.

I live in the Pidemont of North Carolina, and I'm not too worried TBH.

Possibility for mandatory evacuations in NEW YORK CITY?

This storm is gonna wreck ****. Sit back and turn on MSNBC this weekend, history is in the making once more.

New York has feared this for years.

I live in NYC. I've never feared or even thought about this situation. I don't think it will happen either, it's all bull****. Our wonderful piece of **** mayor ****ed up when we had that bad snow storm and now he wants to try to save face and "prepare for the worst" with this storm so he looks like a hero. He's a ****tard.

I won't be leaving my place.

Good luck.

Good luck.

There are lot more cities that are gonna get hit harder then we will, I hope everyone down South is safe. I honestly don't think we are gonna see more then a big thunderstorm with some wind up here, they do this kinda stuff to us every year. It's so everyone goes out and spends some $$$.

Bryan Norcross said:
Wishing there was something encouraging tonight, but there's not. This will likely be THE hurricane of a lifetime for millions. Can't say which millions of the 60 million in the path, but the odds are tilted WAY on the side of a mega-disaster. Most important to figure out: where is your safe place to ride out the storm; and what water will you drink for the time after? Do NOT count on city water being drinkable. Food is easy to store. Water is hard. Think it out NOW.

NYC is the focus of a lot of our thoughts because it is the biggest, most important city (and I love NY too). It's hard to imagine a real hurricane hit in NY, even though we have said for years "it's just a matter of when". It's not certain this will be The Big One, but it's likely to be bad. Mayor Bloomberg's tone was oddly passive today. And it's odd that the governor is absent as well given the risk not just at the coast but upstate as well. Hopefully more urgency tomorrow.

Normally, I would say this is hyperbole, but this is the same Bryan Norcross who predicted Hurricane Andrew, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Wilma as if he came from the future... and with those storms, he never sounded this dire.

While I think I'll be alright in DC, SHGR and VADirt, I'm definitely going to pray for yens. This sounds like it will be one for the ages.

I suppose people have to do whatever they think best but if I lived anyplace from Long Island to Boston to Portland and on the East side of this storm, I'd be preparing.

And if I lived in Cape Hatteras, I'd seriouly consider heading inland for the weekend.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best is excellant advice. People around here get whipped into a frenzy by the weather guessers but then time and time again nothing happens and they've adopted a cavalier attitude. They just might get byitch slapped this time around.

They'll be idiots out there surfing and I hope they're told as they were the last time. That they're on their own. Nobody is going to risk their life to save your stupid azz. Then their momma will be on TV sobbing he was a good boy, why didn't they try to save him? Because he was a stupid azz momma that's why. RI State Trooper lost his life trying to save people right down the road from us. Under manditory evac but they were going to "ride it out". Dumb azz all drown and a good man lost his life.
That area is under manditory evac starting noon tomorrow.

FWIW I had to wait in line for gas yesterday

FEMA has called up my daughter

Anybody in the path take cover and I will hope that everyone will be O/K be safe

376 miles from Cape Hatteras moving at 9 mph
looks like a direct hit on them

I seriously believe that this storm is not to be taken lightly!

Although this storm is not to be taken lightly, I can't watch the coverage from these fools on TV. All they are doing is causing panic, which is NEVER good to do.

I know where you're coming from, but I'd rather prepare for the worst and be surprised when it doesn't happen --- rather than going "ho-hum" and getting washed away.

I'm not really saying that. I mean yes, everyone needs to prepare, but they have the panic button pushed in their words and in their voices. Yes, they need to warn and tell people to prepare, but all they're doing is instilling fear and panic.

Isn't that what they're paid to do? :D

Some do tend to get excited. But, I bet there are a lot of people who have no idea what to expect, and maybe they need to be shook up.

I grew up on L.I. during the 50's and 60"s. I remember several hurricanes hitting L.I. during that time. There was a lot of wind and rain and quite a few trees down.

I remember one storm where the eye came over our area. The trash cans that blew down the street before the eye came over made their return trip once the eye passed and the winds shifted. :D

The coastal areas like Fire Island and Jones Island as well as the Rockaways have the most to lose. But I think this whole thing is being over-hyped in regards to the NYC area.

JMO

As a footnote, I am supposed to be doing an event in Staten Island on the 9th 10th and 11th of September. Glad it wasn't this weekend.

Still not looking forward to having to be in NYC during the 9-11 weekend.

One good thing about imminent landfall of Irene:

MSNBC -- 4-6am EST: "Hurricane Alert: Irene" with Veronica De La Cruz

Well, the one glimmer of hope for us is gone. They said the worst of the storm would be on the east side of the storm -- it's on the west side.
