One of the largest traffic projects in Tennessee history, SmartFix40, is now finished.

Interstate 40 in Knoxville between James White Parkway and Hall of Fame Drive reopens today. Travelers have been using I-640 to detour around the downtown area.

When the $275 million project reopens today, I-40 will feature six lanes with four auxiliary lanes, in hopes to battle traffic congestion.

Drivers will also notice new bridges, ramps, retaining walls and noise walls along residential areas.

The opening ceremony is set to start at 2 p.m.

11 Connects will have coverage of the reopening of I-40 throughout the day.

As TDOTprepares to reopen I-40 through downtown Knoxville, you can watch live on WBIR and wbir.com. If you want to watch the usually scheduled program 'The Doctors,' you can catch it on 10News2.

TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely and several other high-profile Tennesseans will be on-hand to reopen the interstate at 2 p.m. Friday.

In addition to the opening ceremony on wbir.com, you'll be able to watch live video from a helicopter over the proceedings and live video from a camera inside one of the first cars to drive across.

The project is opening after a little over 13 months of closure, ahead of schedule. It is the largest road project in Tennessee history

problem is, it's going to be the same issue DFW has. Alot of the highways here jump between 2 and 3 lanes sporadically. Loop 820 is a guaranteed traffic jam 24/7 because if goes from 2 lanes to 3 back to 2 back to 3 down to a pair of 1 lane off ramps.

I can onl imagine going from 2 or 3 to 6 back to 2 or 3...

will save me about 20 miles each way going to the airport every other week

magnet trust me this is been a long time coming if you had ever been through k town on 40 you know what i mean, 2 real skinny lanes constructed back in the late 60's
