......That people are pointing out that Petty has won this year and that they are in the chase when Richard Petty is basically there in name only. He is a minority owner and doesn't have a real say in things. Gillette is THE owner. Petty Enterprises basically died when Boston Ventures bought them out. There is no connection between Petty and the 9 or 19 car other then the RPM sticker on the headlight sticker. The argument could go for the 43 car, but look where its at in points again this year. Their "aquisition" of Yates is another fiasco because other than the 98/Menard car that is bascially bankrolled by Daddy Menard what are they getting? It just seems to me that by using the Petty name that Gillette is trying to buy some credibility. It also seems that Richard Petty is just whoring his name out to anyone who will give him a ticket to the race. Thoughts?

Thank you! I've been saying that for months, especially after seeing everyone go off the deep end about how great it was to finally have Petty back in vicotry lane when Kaine won. Petty is just the name plate, that's it. Yup, he shows up and "speaks" for the team, but he carries zero influence with the team.
 
What you're saying is true, but Petty is "The King" in more ways than one.

The best way I can describe it is that Petty is like how The Royal Family is in England. Yes, they are just figure-heads, but they carry a lot of influance. They don't make the day-to-day decisions, but if they said that they didn't like something you can bet Parliment would make it right.

Same for Petty. Yes, he may not be in charge, but he has a lot of influance. It's not Gillette that people line up for hours to get an autograph from. No one gives a flying flip about him. Thus if Gillette did something to piss off Petty, then he would make it publicly known and people would turn against him.

Not just fans, but internal personal, and maybe even sponsors. Gillette might be the "Daddy" at RPM, but Richard Petty is the "Mommy".

And if Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

I think you might be overestimating his influence on the team. And in all actuality, it looks more like Petty is a beaten man in that aspect, and he'll do whatever he's asked to make it look like it's still "Richard Petty Motorsports." Moved from Level Cross, let Kyle go, now going to Fords. He may be the king in many's eye, but I don't think he's got a lot left in him. He may be the "mommy," but I think at this point in time, "mommy" is just doing what she's told to do, keeping her mouth shut, and smiling and waving to the fans....
 
Nothing more than a figurehead. Sad. Have to wonder what it'd be like if Adam hadn't died.
