I know necessary but paint schemes are confusing me.

I am finding that seeing the cars with new paint schemes each weekend hard to find the drivers you want to monitor. Sometimes I am two replays into a wreck before I know who is all involved. Must look like a bowl of jellybeans live, until you get color coordinated. Too bad when they have to shift sponsor that they can't get their wrap designers to make some sort of consistency from sponsor to sponsor. Joey going from yellow Bristol to Blue at Fontana (even though the template of design is consistent on his car).

Yeah, it's more difficult these days. It was really easy to pick out Richard Petty's back car when he was racing. But I understand the need for multiple sponsors and each wanting to be represented individually. There is also the big market of die-cast collectibles to consider. The more one-offs a team or driver sports, the more opportunity to make money selling models.

I bought a Kevin Harvick die-cast for a friend which had the KISS sponsorship. I believe it was a one-race deal. My friend loves it!

Another friend, who happens to be an F1 fan, refers to NASCAR as Skittles in a flushing toilet. Quaint, eh?? :)

Ugh money. I used to buy this stuff, even went to inaugural race at Vegas, bought too much of this stuff. Stared at it on the wall for years, had some friends over here and there, maybe talked bout it for 1o minutes, but that's it. Then in 2009 had house fire burnt everything,..............and guess what after the shock don't miss a darn thing,.haven't bought anything since. But I sure enjoy the racing, if I didn't need the first 2 practices just to practice my color schemes I would be golden :D

On Sunday, I kept thinking Clint Bowyer was Martin Truex since they had the same scheme and thought Jamie McMurray was JJ.

This is one of the reason's Richard Petty noted when he announced they'd be all Petty Blue this year.

Speaking of F1, ask your friend how he tells them apart. I can't see any numbers on the TV coverage, the position ticker doesn't show any numbers or colors, and the team cars look identical. At least stock cars have that big freakin' number and a ticker that tells you who it belongs to.

I thinking the villiage people designed some of the current paint schemes. The Lord meant for the cars to be solid colors.

I know it's considered multi-tasking in some parts of the country but try concentrating on the number of the car as well as its color . . .

That's really what it comes down to , ignore the car color.

The F1's, they don't need numbers, they aren't going to pass anybody anyway, and if they do, you can't understand the race announcer anyway. I keep thinking there is a bee in the room, so I keep my swatter handy when I watch. I like to listen to a V8 at full song, not some toaster sized import motor. weeeeeeeeeee weeeeeeeeeeee...splat

That's funny! But as a retired engineer, you must appreciate the technology and the research that goes into building a winning F1 car.

My all-time favorite racing series was the Can-Am series. With F1-level technology and Big Block V8 engines they were simply amazing to watch and listen to! Unfortunately, this short video does not have any engine notes but it shows some interesting affectations of the Can-Am cars.

You have probably already seen this one. Jim Pace takes no prisoners in this big block Lola. No traction control, paddle shifter, blah blah, just pure guts. This thing sounds fantastic.

You can tell how hard he is driving from all the counter steering he is doing...caught the wheelhop good at 3:15

I was kidding a bit on Formula 1. It isn't the best form of racing IMO, but I still watch it. Especially since they have one of the greatest race tracks in the world in Austin Texas now. What is interesting to me is the number of formula 1 and other open wheel drivers/champions that have raced and are racing a stock car. Nascar has made it impossible for a stock car driver to go race at the Indy 500 which I think is a big mistake. they purposely made their race longer so it can't happen anymore. I think Tony Stewart was the last to race both races on the same day. I like the Nascar road races the best because you do get champions from other forms of racing competing. It is like an all star race, gives you a pretty good idea of just how good the Nascar drivers are compared to the rest of the world.

I guess it goes down to personal preferences..plenty of people think this four banger sounds better. Not to me, they don't shake the ground when they go by.:)
!

Actually, it was Tony Effen George who made it impossible for a driver to "do the double". He changed the starting time of the Indy 500 so that no driver could get from Indianapolis to Charlotte in time for the start of the NASCAR race. He felt that having NASCAR drivers compete in "his" race detracted from the "spectacle" that is the INDY 500.

Check this one out Magnet head..same driver but he is in a 427 McLaren and it is really tail happy

Those were great video clips! As a RACE FAN I appreciate the effort and skill required to compete on a road course.
Thanks for posting those clips!

I don't quite understand how the H-pattern shifter works with center drive, I guess with a trans axle, you can put the shifter wherever you want as long as the linkage rods go the right place?

The 4 banger wasps have their place. I like the song of the high RPM's of open wheel.

Yeah, I got carried away there and screwed up the thread sorry bout that. One more can am snippet and I will shut up. This car right here pretty much put an end to Can Am racing, back then auto racing was a blood sport. 1500hp, 250mph is where it got too and many deaths. The McLaren M6B above killed it's inventor Bruce McLaren. Mark Donahue was a good friend/driver for Rodger Penske, when he died Penske got out of that type of racing. But anyway look at this thing up close..and I am done..

I enjoy the videos too.

There is a Sports car racing forum here (in Other Racing) that should get some attention as the Gandam and ALMS merger gets more info out.

I'm not a gearhead. I can appreciate that the technology is bleeding edge, but the racing (or at least the broadcast coverage of it) doesn't have much entertainment value for me. There's a lack of passing and the looming threat of team orders.

If I could make changes to F1 TV coverage, I'd start by displaying complete driver names in the position ticker instead of three-letter abbreviations. I'd also have those names in the car colors like we see in NASCAR coverage. These guys names and sponsors may be as well-known to their dedicated fans as our drivers are to us, but the coverage doesn't make clear who is who to casual fans or wannabes.

The other change I'd make is one I'd make to TV coverage of all forms of road course racing. I'd add a graphic to each camera's feed that indicates what corner I'm looking at. When a shot of Turn 7 is on the screen, there'd be a small 'T7' somewhere on the screen.

:) Yeah I looked up the thread, it was already going downhill before we twisted it. Charlie needs to write F1 a letter, those would be some nice changes.
This one below is Daytona, Sebring and Brands Hatch in 1970. Lots of shots of Daytona, man it has changed. Steve McQueen comes in second at Sebring. He is in a brief shot getting out of the car.
