I keep getting two pop-ups on my screen.

The first box, which appears on the bottom right of the screen, above the tool bar, says...

Spyware Protect 2009 alert

INFILTRATION ALERT

Your computer is being attacked by an Internet Virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan - dropper or similar.

DETAILS

Attack from: 203.41.45.69, port 20201
Attacked port: 57569
Threat: Win/32/Nuqel.E

Do you want to block this attack?

Then there is yes or no blocks. If you click no, it goes away but comes back up within a few minutes or sometimes even seconds. If you click on yes, it takes me to a page where it wants $49.95 to download a program to fix it.

If I clock no, the box closes then comes back, like I said. But then another bigger box that says something similar pops up in the middle of my screen and asks if I want to continue unprotected or some other option.

The second box just appeared again. It says

Spyware Alert

Vulnerabilities found

Your computer is infected by spyware - 34 serious threats have been found while scanning your files and registry. It is strongly recommended that you disinfect your computer and activate Realtime secure protection against future intrusions.

There is a link that says "Why do you need Spyware protection?"

Upgrade to full version of Spyware Protect 2009 security kit to clean your computer and prevent new security and privacy attacks. You will be able to download daily updats and get online protection against Internet attacks.

The I get two boxes "Activate Spyware Protect 2009" and "Stay unprotected"

Now when I click on either the "Yes" box or the Activate...box it takes me to a blank internet page that says 404 error or something.

I have AntiVir, that my computer guy installed a while back. It usually stops everything. It scans my computer daily and is not reporting anything wrong.

Since AntiVir isn't finding anything wrong I suspect that this is just some kind of sales scare tactic, but I don't know.

Do I need more protection than I have with AntiVir? If so what should I do?

If I don't, do you guys have any idea how to get these annoying pop-ups to stop? They are driving me nuts.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

I use SUPERAntiSpyware and Trend Micro they both have free home editions that work pretty good and they don't cost you to remove the infections.I never seen 1 anti-virus program that finds everything

I use Avast and have not had a problem in 4 years, but your problem sounds like you have malicious spyware on your machine. It is a scam, they get into your system then blackmail you into paying to have them remove it. Problem is lots of times they take your money, now they have your credit card info. and they unload more viruses on you and steel all your personal info. ABC just recently did a piece on this very thing.

Go to microsoft and download the malicious spyware removal tool and you should be able to get rid of it.
Then download Avast, it is free but they allow single non commercial clients to use it free but it is an excellent software that guards many of the big business and that's how they make their money.

Avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I forgot, I have Spybot that runs all the time too. http://www.spybotdownload.org/index3.html

I'm actually unprotected right now on Vista, been too lazy to reinstall AVG. Going on 9 months, no issues, only 1 malware. But i'm dead careful where i go/what i do.

gimme a sec and i'll upload a program my dad's company's IT guy sent out.

This is a good program. I've used it and it works. Doesn't matter if you use AVG or Avast (which is what I use), some programs can get passed any of them. Just remember when you use any program to fix a trojan or virus, be sure and boot up in "safe mode".

x3 for Malwarebytes.

I personally use Ad-Aware from lavasoft and Malwarebytes. 2 very good programs.

I recommend this file to fix any trojan, web hijacker etc. It's called smitfraudfix.

Download, it will be your best friend. Easy to use, just follow the screen's instructions. It gets rid of all those nasty hijackers and worms.

I use malwarebytes, the built in Vista deal, lavasoft ad-aware SE, and about 5 programs. But i have to KNOW something's going on before i'll do the whole lock and load method...

I saw on TV this morning where the Conficker virus had a pop up like that. It says 2009 virus protection and then asks you to put in a credit card to buy it at $50. They have your credit card info and keep your $50 bucks. Good news though they said Conficker is supposed to self destruct in May.

Get AVG or AVAST, I preferr AVG. I also run Iorbit.

With AVG and Iorbit I no longer see a need for spy or malware software, they seem to catch, actually have caught, everything since installed.

I've had AVG for 5 years, best anti-virus out there I think , especially for the $$, it is about half the cost of Norton or similar virus protection and does a much better job. You have some spyware on your puter, once you wipe it out make sure you do an extensive virus scan for anything suspicous.

BenOne, just keep a few things in mind. First off, you need a good anti-virus as everyone knows. There are some that are free and are as effective as any of the commercial ones. Secondly, you should scan your computer with anti-spy ware programs about once a week and again, there are many of those that are free. Two that are the most talked about are SpyBot-Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware, both of which are free. If you run into a problem that you believe is harmful of your computer, you can run the program hijackthis to see exactly what you have on your computer, but before you do anything, consult any number of groups that help people in these problems. Sometimes it is more difficult to delete a trojan and you will get better help from those who are experts in this area. But it's important that you have the anti-virus and any number of anti-spyware programs that you can find. Remember, you can only have one anti-virus running on your computer at a time, but you can have all the anti-spyware programs you want running. Lastly, it's a good idea to download and run the program "Belarc Advisor". This program will tell you everything on your computer that you really need to know. It won't tell you about any virus or trojan, but it will tell you what programs you have, any product key numbers that you might have lost but need, and more importantly, any or all Windows updates that you have or don't have.

The most important thing is to keep your computer clean, but just as house cleaning, it takes work, or extra time now and then. Do all of the above and keep your hard drive defragmented and you'll be happy as a clam...for the most part! :)

I tried several of these links use guys suggested.

Nothing helped until I used the link one of you gave me for Stopzilla. It took hours to run it's first scan and it cost me $39.95 up front (with a $30 mail in rebate promise). But, it fixed the problem I was having. My computer is incredibly slow right now, but it seems to be getting back to normal. $40 seems like a pretty small price to pay to fix something that annoying, I guess.

Thanks again for all of your help.
