I am the lucky receiver of the sasser worm. I can't get rid of the stupid thing  I let my subscription expire on the anti-virus. Is there anyway to get rid of this thing without renewing? I've tried everything I know. I tried downloading the patch, but it stops with about 65%. It has slowed my computer down so much I can't renew the subscription till I get rid of this thing. I've just got it to bypass the shut down it was doing every 60 seconds. Any help would be great, I'm about to throw this new computer out the window. I've missed talking everyone on here. Please help!!!

I went to the Symantec Security Response page and looked up the tool to fix the Sasser worm. i had Sasser and the Sasserb worm. The tool got both of them off for me.

On there look for W32.Sasser Removal Tool. That helped me out alot.

i usually go to computercops.biz they have helped me many times undoing the damage i do to my computer.

Shady, would you like me to email DE? He is gifted in the field, as is smack.

sgbg...........try this. It's from Symantics (Norton) and they are good!! I'm using McAfee right now but 6 of 1, a 1/2 dozen of another!! :) Then once you get rid of your worm, then get your butt an anti-virus..............and keep it updated!! Also do your Microsoft Critical Updates............I check daily because I don't like auto-updates. But if you have no problems with auto stuff, then make it do it automatically (that's what cutie does). $40 is a small price to pay........Norton, McAfee, or any other AV will do........just do it.

Sasser removal tool

Go to www.AVAST.com they have a free 60 day version of an anti- virus Works good too , i'm using it right now and it updates every time you sign on

DE, have you ever tried Big FIx?

It gives me notification even before microsoft does.

It's a great program and it is free! It's at BigFix.com.

I've tried Big Fix..........a long time ago. It's pretty good about offering suggestions and notifying you of updates. But over time I found that a lot of their fixes were not necessary.......so be careful what you "fix" . Not that any of the fixes caused too many problems but they were just unnecessary for my use. I'm one for not getting anything on my computer that I don't need..........but then again, I want everything I do need!! :D

DE I've tried to save that fix to my decktop so I can run it, but it just gets to 65% and stays forever. Am I doing something wrong? Please help, I'm going crazy!!! I promise to update my computer and get a current anti-virus!!!

shady, you may have to do what I did, use someone else's computer to download the "fix" onto cdrom. You then don't have to be on the internet (which is when your computer keeps shutting down) to install the "fix". And, then, GET SOME ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE!!! ;)

I maybe a well-known celebrity, however, I am very knowledgable about computers as I've used them for various purposes, purposes I will not disclose here.

Theres a free virus scanner at:

Have fun, and continue to watch my movies.

Shady, did you read that web page completely? There are some pointers for you. You said your computer reboots.........is there a pattern that you can predict (like once every 5 mins or 10 mins)? If there's not enough time to download the file before you crash then you will most likely have to "borrow" someones computer to download and copy to CD or floppies............what Maj said. :)

No De I got around that problem! It just seems to hang up at around 65% downloaded. My friend told me since I'm on dial-up that it will take a lot longer than I expected. But I've let it sit for an hour and it still is at 65%. I really appreciate all the help you all are giving me, I'm about ready to give up!!

I'm going to try again and just let it sit for as long as needed. One question--can I still go to other websites while I'm downloading the fix?

As long as you are not crashed and your browser is working and your dialup connection is maintained, you should be able to surf while downloading.............it will slow everything down though.

By "giving up" are you saying you are going to format and restore? Or toss the computer out the window? :D

Toss!!! I think I'm going to let this download while I'm sleeping tonight and wake up to a better computer!! Or still be in the nightmare I'm in now!! <_< I can't believe I let just those updates sit there and not download them. You can bet I'll use them after I fix this!!! :)

The removal tool is only 148 kb........you should be able to download in a minute or so even on dialup. Did you do the Microsoft patch first? Or is that what's hanging? You must get the patch first according to the instructions. Also the file being only 148 kb you can copy to a floppy.

I had a bunch of worms and viruses on my computer a few weeks ago. I ended up restoring my whole computer. Of course I lost all of the files I had put in, but it is a small price to pay.

I screwed around with McAfee, Microsoft, Adaware, and many others before I gave up and just restored the whole system.

It took a few hours to do, but all is well now and the $90 I paid McAfee to try to fix the problem is giving me some serious protection from future attacks for the next year.

If you still cant download the removal tools, and cant find someone elses computer to use. You can remove it manually.

1. Disconnect your computer from the Internet.
2. Boot in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key during startup.
3 Navigate to your Windows directory (c:\WINDOWS or c:\WINNT) on your hard drive.
4. Look for a file named AVSERVE.EXE. Delete it.
5. Click on the Start menu and select Run.
6. Type "regedit" (without quotes).
7. Navigate to the following Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
8. In the windows to the right, look for a value called avserve. Delete it.
9. Exit RegEdit.
10. Restart
