I thought Toyotas were supposed to be good cars

The difference, I suppose, is that GM would have continued to sell these cars and hope the problem went away. I can't tell you how many defects GM has had over the years yet refused to improve the design because dealerships made a lot of money fixing these issues as soon as the warranties ran out.

Toyota knew about the problem and continued to sell them until the government made them stop.
