This is like the one that got away from me. Same color and all. A week doesn't go by that I don't think about that car.
I did about the same thing. I could have gotten a used AMX but went with a new Gremlin. (At the time used muscle cars were usually used up). I'm still kicking myself. Now a used one costs $20-30k.

I drove that car off of the showroom floor in November 1969 with 7 miles on the odometer. It was still in great condition when I traded it in for a new 76 Gran Torino in late 1975.

I can't remember the year, but we also had a Gremlin. Bright white with reddish orange racing stripes. We had dual CB antennas on the roof in matching orange. That little car was fun to drive. We took off the original tires and put some good radials on it --- made it handle in corners like a dream.

Mine was red with white stripes. I took out the back seat and replaced the front seat with one from a 65 Rambler (it could fold down into a makeshift bed). Made a platform in back over the spare tire where my dog could ride comfortably and have a good view. Good millage but terrible in snow. I learned my auto repair skills with that car.

I remember as a teen seeing a Javelin at the drags and what I seem to recall was a '70. I do remember that it was a 390 4 speed and wicked quick. Pretty much a stock, weekend play toy. They never even took the pipes off it. LOL

In high school a buddy of mine had an RS/SS Camaro very similar to Stewart Fan's picture, except it was kind-of beat up (it was a ten year old car). His Dad bought it as a fix-up project and let him drive it when he wasn't grounded :>). I never saw it fixed up (I went off to college) but I heard they made it pretty nice. Don't know what became of it since they moved away while I was at school.

The car that keeps eluding me (mostly due to budget) is a 1968 or 1969 GTO convertible. I saw a gold and black one when I was a kid and fell in love. About ten years ago I saw one that was black on black for sale at the Charlotte Auto Fair... very nice condition and the price was very reasonable... but I wimped out afraid of what the Better Half would say. Still kick myself for passing that one up... today similar cars are going for more than double what that guy was asking.

My buddy's RS/SS brought back memories... I'm going to share a story if you don't mind.

My buddy roped me into helping him look at a used car that the sister of one of his other friends was thinking of buying. It was a late 1960s Plymouth Fury ex-patrol car. Except for a sloppy spray paint job over the trooper markings it looked okay for the money... but it also showed that it needed maintenance so we cautioned her to drive it home carefully and the next day we'd fix it up. She wasn't familiar with the area so she followed us home for most of the way... we got called three times on the CB radio "hey little red Camaro you're being followed by an unmarked State Trooper".
When we got near home she recognized her surroundings and decided to punch it to see what it had... a quarter mile later black smoke came out - water pump broke and sent the fan into the radiator. She pulled off and we pulled up behind her and helped her get a tow truck. Somebody on the CB said "way to go Camaro that cop couldn't handle you!"

Fortunately we were able to fix the Fury pretty cheaply with junkyard parts.
