I Wonder How Many Will Remember and How Much??

Do those who recall that time and actually lived during the fifties think times were better then or now?

Regardless of the answer, not much can beat Ronnie Milsap singing that song.

I don't think things were as stressful as they are today. Yes we had drills to duck and cover under our desk at school in case the commies dropped an A bomb on us. . Family a few streets over put a bomb shelter in their back yard.
I was just a kid but looking back things were so much simpler then.

I remember a lot of those things. It was a simpler time back then, things moved slower. It seemed that people cared about each other more.

People have changed. I recall in the sixties, waiting three years to join the local volunteer fire department in the town where I was born and raised. Today, that same fire department is begging for members and nothing has changed to reduce the number. People just say they have no time but what they really mean is, they do not want the inconvenience.
The interstate highway system gave new found freedom to people who traveled further in shorter time and once got where they were going, some remained. This helped tear down the family unit.
The local Kiwanis, Rotary, JayCee Clubs, various fraternal organizations like Masonic Order and Elks, Moose, Eagles, church groups, are not getting new, or very few, members and no one volunteers they way they did in the fifties and sixties. Why is that?
From the forums here, I've gleaned there are one or two who do little league, one is a volunteer fireman and volunteers in his church (they know who they are), but what about you? Why are you not volunteering in your community? Are we all so self-absorbed we do not have time to help in a volunteer capacity with an organization that gives back to the community we live in?
People grumble the community life has diminished but why wouldn't it when no one wants to volunteer for anything because they are too busy and I ask, busy doing what? I read posts on this forum and very few people volunteer but there is an over abundance of whiners about everything that is wrong with America.

Due to diminishing membership the Elks have been accepting women as members for a number of years.

First question on the application when I joined was ''Are you a white male?" That's been changed.....

I am glad I ran across this trip down memory lane and as easy as it is to idealize the past but I believe they were better times. Today it seems as if chasing experiences that bring pleasure are more important than living a life that brings happiness. There is nothing wrong with pleasurable experiences but when they are confused with long term happiness or building a path to happiness the person will always be disappointed. If a person is happy they are normally content and if you are content you generally have a good idea of what is important and what is not. I know country folk in Alabama who have very little materially but they are the happiest people I know and they all sleep like babies.

Part of the problem is that we have a microwave mentality and want everything on demand and it better be our way right away. When I was a kid the movie theater was a magical place to go as we were transported to another place without leaving our seats but these days we sit and binge watch programs without leaving the house. There is no anticipation or effort required and after the consuming 8 hours of programming we are just as empty as we were when we began.

Our priorities are screwed up as we discard people the moment things get tough and being truthful and honoring commitments are not that important. We spend time with people instead of investing time in them and we often hear but rarely listen. Life is completely out of balance for many, many people as they have been sold a bill of goods that life requires them to be busy all the time. Being busy is equated with being important when in most cases being busy is just ticking away the moments that make up a dull day.

I work 12-15 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week. I have a wife and son to take care of. Grass to mow, trash to take out, vehicles to maintain, etc, etc. Not sure where I would be able to pencil in volunteering?
