....how about doing it without a Chase? I know Brian will never nix the Chase, but what if we just took the top-4 in points after Phoenix and put them in the Homestead Bowl? The only caveat being that you have to have at least one win to qualify, otherwise the driver 5th in points after Phoenix gets in provided he has at least one win. Reset the four drivers to 2,000 points + 3 points per win. I think it would be a nice mix of old and new. Wins would still be super-important, points would once again be important, the full season body of work would mean more, there would be zero chance of a winless champion, and it's simpler to follow than the current system.

Please forgive me for posting a "how I'd change the Chase" thread, which we've all seen a million of. I just thought this could possibly work pretty well. :)

It sounds dumb which means Brian France is likely to adopt it

Not a bad idea but I think part of the reasoning for the Chase is to compete with the start of the NFL, NBA, NHL and the World Series. It's NASCAR's "playoffs" as Ricky Craven likes to say, so having 10 weeks to talk about the NASCAR championship is probably the goal.

I much prefer the old system.

Maybe a little bit of that is because Gordon would be "6 time" if they never would have changed the points. He would be considered the GOAT.

Oh well.

There's no question in my mind he's the GOAT.

Yeah, if there's a runaway for the top four spots the lazy media will have nothing to talk about.

Unless there is a car that starts to dominate the races before the cut off, and continue thru the eliminations, this new chase could come down to the wire. That is what they are trying to do, create that scenario. We'll see. The switch to winning instead of points racing has been a hit with me so far. Last year in other racing series F-1, Daytona prototypes, it was over three races before the end. Nascar was the same way. I would rather have it the new way if it works with eliminations and 4 run for it all.

can't have homestead superbowl w/o playoffs .
that'd be tha 9 races before then ....w/ elimination emphasis on race # 3...6....9

I'm all for just leaving things as they are. The constant changing of how the champion is determined is doing nothing but diminishing the accomplishment IMO. If they'd just leave the method alone for several years it'll become commonplace and an afterthought about changing. We are now on our 5th version of determining the NASCAR Champion over the past 12 years. Let's set it in stone and move along.

Can we set it in stone correctly instead of just duct taping it on there & hoping it stays? :D
