If yesterday was any indication...

... of what we'll see Thursday and Sunday, nothing's in stone.

Track's lost a lot of grip though, lots of crashes yesterday.

I'd like to point at goodyear of course. Tires falling off after 10 laps is bad...and they DID change both compounds for this race.

But, the hoosiers, while they went the full 40 lap run i believe, had just as much non-existant grip.

So I agree, the full packs WILL be interesting. As "tight..tight..tight..LOOSE!" as these cars are, and the way the draft works, and what little grip there is, the lead is the only place i'd feel comfortable at.

A guy on the bottom either slides up because he's tight or because he's loose and it's just so difficult to race out there, especially racing like three-wide or something like that and bump-drafting each other. The cars are tipping back and forth and all over the place. They're very hard to handle. I mean, we look like ARCA drivers."

"The 96 [Bobby Labonte] wrecked about five times and just didn't complete it, so I think it was harder in the beginning. You had some guys in the front that their cars didn't drive very well and when the faster guys whose cars drove well made them three-wide, it was a little bit scary."

"I expected it to be wild [but] man I hope the 500's not like this," Gordon said before making a prediction. "If there are cautions late in the race, absolutely [because] everybody comes here to win. A 500-mile race, we have to use our heads more than that.

The varying track conditions gave Reutimann a small cause for concern.

"The cars should handle a lot better in the configuration we've got now [so] it gives me a little concern about the 500 being in the daytime," Reutimann said. "The track definitely gets slick with not quite as much grip so I think this is probably about as good as it's gonna get as far as how they drive, so we're gonna have to work on 'em a little bit."

LMAO

Inside joke here, but part of that needs to go on my long status...haha...

ok soory...

When was the last time Daytona was re-paved? Seems like everyone complained about grip. The humps, bumps, dips and doodles don't help either.

In qualifying how many cars did we see moved up the track after hitting one? Having a solid front end by riding on bump stops contributes too.

I think the bump stops contribute a LOT to the problems they are having.

I believe it got paved about 3 years ago? I could be wrong but it seems like it wasn't too long ago.

The ARCA cars went longer without a caution than did the Cup cars... and the ARCA race was a crashfest.

Yeh different car though, COTs do not have correct tire combination and haven't had since the get go.
They were having a lot of handling issues in the ARCA race, in all fairness. But the track was warmer and had less grip.

It looks like Goodyear brought a 10 lap tire to Daytona.

Because the Brickyard 400 last year was such a thriller weve got to repeat that:sarcasm:

Only thing I found was the infield areas for the bikes and sports cars was done in 2004.

Didn't Sr gripe about the condition of the track?

I think ole' Ironhead would be giving NASCAR an earful about this COT if he was still around.

Wouldn't he though!:D

I do wonder about Na$cars thinking about the COT. Has any driver given it a thumbs up running on any track? Last year Na$car put a muzzle on the drivers complaining about the car yet I haven't seen any rule changes.

If they want to keep it wider and higher for driver safety fine, but get rid of that stupid wing and front splitter. Go back to a valance and spoiler.

I forget who said it, but one of the drivers said they'd like to see Daytona get repaved, considering how much it improved Talladega, but at the same time, paving it would take away the uniqueness of it being the handling racetrack that Daytona is, because of all the bumps.

I'd have to go back and check the rolex race. I don't think those cars, DP or GT, were bouncing anythign close to how the ARCA and cup cars are. But i think part of that is also because they run right by the wall, they don't hug the yellow line as much as the stockers.

Just thinking about what he would've said makes me grin. Who can forget his comments about the restrictor plates?:D

You mean like the one of tying kerosene rags around your ankles so the ants don't crawl up and eat your candy azz?

A true classic!:D

Yes, that one! Dale had a way with words.:D Only person now with the balls to stand up to NASCAR is Smoke.

When Dale died no one stepped up to speak for the drivers. DJ, Ricky Rudd, Awesum Bill, Ken Schrader or even Jeff gordon who had 9-10 years under his belt by then.
I found that disappointing. Na$car has since done whatever it pleases without objections.
Fining Jr 10k for saying chit in victoty lane,,#1 why isn't the broadcast on a 7second time delay like radio and most tv live shows are?
They jam a mike in there face as soon as they get out,if they've been wrecked do they really expect them to say golly, gee?
If bad words offend you don't come to the pits at my short track becuase you'll leave with your ears bleeding!!!

Yeah, I've been in the sportsman pits after some nasty accidents and them boys don't sugar coat anything at the short tracks.

I think the twin races are gonna be a crash fest. Too many part time teams and unexperianced drivers trying to get to the front or they wont make the race.

The Daytona 500 might have a couple accident early but could have a long green flag run for the most part. But as the Daytona 500 usually goes there will be a slew of caution flags the final 25 laps.

I'd have to agree 100% on that, the 150s look to me like they will be a sheetmetal nightmare. The pressure this year to make the race is even more due to the sponsors being very tight with their money. The crappy economy has forced many teams to pick and choose what races to run. The 500 being the Crown Jewel for these guys means that if you get noticed in a good way your sponsor might stick around for a few more races. So, Yeh, watch out I think the 150s will be very interesting to say the least, also very much a dangerous race.

if more than 20 drivers have to "go to the back" due to backup cars.....is the backup car rule still used or is it considered a null point?

AFAIK if you go to a back up car you start in the rear. I've never heard if X number of cars have problems the rule is nullified.

I'm just speculating but if every car was damaged and went to a back up or had a engine change Na$car wouldn't have a clue what to do.

But they'd come up with something,,,,:sarcasm:

well i figure..we have what, 28 cars in each 150? That's as many as the bud shootout, with the exact same goal- finish as far forward as you can.

As we saw how that went...

If I was martin truex and mark martin I would pull over let the field pass and hang out in the back and I mean waaaaaaay back, for the duels that is.
