Homer Simpson has an opinion on the best way to conduct an industrial dispute: "If you don't like your job, you don't strike. You just go in every day and do it really half-assed. That's the American Way." But the voice behind those words sees it rather differently.

Dan Castellaneta, the actor who provides the voice for the star of the hit cartoon series, has joined his fellow cast members in a strike over pay rates on the Fox TV series, which is currently shown on BBC2 in the UK.

The cast, which includes Hank Azaria (Moe, Apu and others), Harry Shearer (Mr Burns and others), Yeardley Smith (Lisa), Julie Kavner (Marge) and Nancy Cartwright (Bart), has failed to appear for two script readings in recent weeks, delaying production of the programme's 16th series.

According to the Hollywood trade paper Variety, the dispute centres on a demand by each of the actors that they be paid $360,000 (£194,000) an episode instead of their current $125,000.

The increase would see each of them receive $8m a series. The actors work an average of six to seven hours each per episode.

However, the cartoon is thought to be worth $1bn to its owner, Rupert Murdoch's 20th Century Fox.

In 1998, a similar round of negotiations led to the actors securing a pay deal that took them from $30,000 an episode to their current level. Then, the threat of a strike led the show's producers to hire casting directors in five cities with a view to replacing the actors. But a deal was reached before casting took place.

Negotiations have been going on for several months but no agreement has been reached.

The dispute comes against the background of preparations for a film version of the Simpsons. 20th Century Fox confirmed last month that series creator Matt Groening and other writers were working on a Simpsons movie.

Hmm, if they dont want 125,000 I'll take it. Wonder if I could sound like anybody on that show. Nah, I'm thinkin the accent might cause a problem, haha.

Nah, King of the Hill doesnt do anything for me.

Man, the best character ever was Lionel Hutz, had some of the best quotes in the Simpsons:

""Milhouse, baby! Lionel Hutz here. I'll be your new lawyer, bodyguard, unauthorized biographer and drug dealerrrrrrrr eh... keeper awayer.""

I love it when homer went to do something in the power poll/phone poll.

I like King of the Hill. Haven't watch 5 shows of the Simson since they have been on. But I would be on the show for 125.000 per show.

A Simpson's Movie....

That would be great!

...Or at least decent...

...Maybe I'll rent it....

...if it gets good reviews....

...maybe....

I dont know, whenever a tv show gets turned into a movie, it ends up horrible. Like Beavis and Butthead for example.

Thank god they arent making this like a real-life movie, non-animation, they'd probably get John Malkovich to play Homer Simpson LOL

Also, theres another reason why the Simpsons is seemingly falling off in ratings. Personally, I believe the comedy is still good, but you have these damn Reality TV Shows that are wasting up everybody's time and filling the airwaves. With that in mind, Fox kicked out The Simpsons out of their weekly programming and kicked it back to the weekends so Fox could have these loser TV shows like American Idol, Paradise Hotel or whatever the hell its called.

I hate to say it, but despite The Simpsons still having the same good old comedy, FOX will probably cancel it and be a reality TV network, reality TV makes lots of cash, its awful low cost to produce it and it wastes everyones time, yet it still attracts millions of viewers. NBC is also following suit, it's canning Friends, Frasier and other shows in favor of reality TV. In short, dirt-cheap, makes lots of money will unfortunately attract the executive's eye and will undoubtedly replace long-time running shows like The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, Friends and Frasier.

I have never seen one of the reality shows. I am not a fan of the Simpsons at all but if I had to watch one of the two the Simpsons would win out. :D
