I hate the current point system.True,it is much better than any prior ps in top level NASCAR racing, but still in need of improvement. The current point system is designed to reward consistency over performance. And another glaring flaw is that it maintains the SAME point-count for any type track.A win at Loudon is worth as many points as a win at Indy or Daytona.I dis-agree with that aspect too.The modern day point system---that is the Earnhardt/Gordon era system is much different than previous systems. The 'pre-modern' Nascar put MUCH more emphasis on race victories than point-counting.David Pearson could have had God knows how many titles---IF he had chosen to run the full race schedules instead of only the 'big' events. Also, more races were run and the field contained much larger numbers of entries back then.Winning in a field of 60 cars is much harder than beating 42 or so.
Just a little rant.
Here are a few ideas for improving the point system:
1.A bigger spread thru-out the field. The current system does not address winning enough.Give the winner at least 15-20 points more than the second place guy.
2.Points for the pole?A good idea(especially if you are a Ryan Newman fan)!
3.More points for short track/road course wins.Superspeedways the middle ground, plate races the least.
4.Only a top 25 finish gets you points.Think about the repercussions of this! This would sure create a LOT more racing thru-out the field.
5.Barelypure had a great point:No points for caution-leading.I agree with that.
6.Finally:If you aren't a regular circuit
driver(Fellows or Said, for instance)NO points. No need to let these one type track wonders take points from the guys who race hard every week,IMO.
These ideas may or may not be feasible...just some ideas to toss around.
