Indianapolis 500 now a two-weekend event

Here is the breakdown of the month of May..

It will consist of a 2 week and a 3 weekend event. There will be 2 days of track qualifications. There will be 12 days of on-track action. Opening day this year is Saturday, May 15th. The full qualification format will be announced later.

Here is how the schedule will break down..

Saturday, May 8th & Sunday, May 9th - Centennial Era Balloon Festival
Saturday, May 15th - Indy 500 Opening day ceremonies, practice and rookie orientation program.
Sunday, May 16: Practice (All Drivers)
Monday, May 17-Thursday, May 20: Practice (All Drivers)
Friday, May 21: Fast Friday Practice (All Drivers)
Saturday, May 22: Pole Day Qualifying
Sunday, May 23: Bump Day Qualifying
Monday, May 24-Tuesday, May 25: No Track Activity
Wednesday, May 26: American Family Insurance 500 Festival Community Day (No Track Activity)
Thursday, May 27: Firestone Freedom 100 Practice, Qualifying
Friday, May 28: Miller Lite Carb Day (Indianapolis 500 Final Practice, Firestone Freedom 100, Pit Stop Challenge, Miller Lite Carb Day Concert)
Saturday, May 29: Public Drivers' Meeting (No Track Activity)
Sunday, May 30: 2010 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race
 
I have to say I love this idea. Having 11 cars a day spread through 4 days made days 2 and 3 pretty much boring to watch. Now everyone will qualify on the same week instead of the teams with money qualifying first week and teams that cant afford the whole month having to start 23rd or farther back. Also is going to make for a very crazy bump day to see who gets into the field.
 
Yes, qualifying should be real good. The thing that worries me is the weather here in May, its unpredictable. I fear of rain.:eek:

i like the new format a lot. i love indy but dragging it out a whole month for one race was just too long. looks like they've taken rain delays into account by leaving mon-wed available for qualifying/bumping if needed.
