IndyCar Race in China Canceled

yes, its cancelled and possibly Pocono or Texas as a replacement. I for one, am glad its cancelled, they shouldnt go over there to begin with.

Bernard said it’s possible the replacement race happens after the Sept. 15 race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

The possibilities include races at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., Pocono Raceway and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
I'll admit to being slightly interested in China, if only for the unique location, but no one is going to miss it if we get an oval or purpose built road course out of the deal, especially any of those three.

I would love to go to Phoenix but Texas is getting a good look right now as a replacement.

More penalties were given out and they will be enforced at this race. They are as follows..

Scott Dixon - unapproved engine change at Iowa test
Will Power -unapproved engine change at Texas
Justin Wilson - unapproved engine change at Iowa test
Mike Conway -unapproved engine change at Iowa test
Takuma Sato -unapproved engine change at Texas
Josef Newgarden -unapproved engine change at Texas

Word is going around that Road America has in fact "made a bid" and is awaiting word from IndyCar. Great news, and if true (apparently it's straight from the RA CEO himself), then it shouldn't take long to get an announcement. The fans want this, the drivers want it, and you won't find a more receptive audience on such short notice.

And through discussion, it also seems that while Pocono may be out of the picture right now, it's looking pretty good for a 2013 date.

You get a penalty for changing an engine at a Test? What kind of penalty?

Ten spots on the grid at the next race, but that's not even the worst part. If the engine fails during a race, you're fine. If you need to change it at any other point in the season, it's a penalty. It's another infamous "cost cutting measure" in auto racing (those always seem to do more harm than good). An engine has to run a minimum of 1850 miles before it can be changed, and if it doesn't happen to blow up during a race, the driver is arbitrarily penalized. It's asinine. I don't understand why they can't just dock manufacturer's points and leave the penalties for changes that happen on race weekend.

Indy will end it's season at Fontana which will be extended to 500 miles.

It's unfortunate that there won't be a replacement, but it's not surprising news. In order for Road America to happen, which seemed like the only logical option, they needed to announce it a week ago. The more time passed, the more clear it became that they weren't doing it. I guess we can still hope for next year, since there is definite interest in IndyCar on the part of Road America.

Fontana being 500 miles however, is excellent news. That's what it needs to be, and if either Pocono or Michigan are added next year, that should be 500 as well. A quasi triple crown revival.

Its funny if people said that about NASCAR at Fontana we'd be in an uproar

Low banked two mile race tracks are historically much better suited to IndyCar than stock cars, and 500 mile races outside of Indianapolis used to be an important tradition in American open wheel racing. USAC used to have a triple crown of 500 mile races at Indy, Pocono, and Ontario. With Pocono potentially being added to the schedule next season, there's a good chance of a new triple crown with two of the original tracks (Fontana also happens to be two miles from where Ontario Motor Speedway once stood).

If Indycar wants more fans they will need to virtually eliminate street and road courses and run lots of ovals.

Actually besides Indy and Iowa the oval crowd turnout has been horrendous this season. While Road and Street course tracks have had pretty nice turn outs. I think a 20 race schuedual with 10 ovals and 10 road courses would be the best way to go.

Those massive NASCAR grandstands tend to dwarf there crowd. And street race attendance is good compared to what?

12,000 people in the grandstands at St Pete is good? And the TV ratings are beyond horrible.

Get back to ovals and rebuild the series.

Lots of good info here regarding ratings and attendance: http://www.indycargarage.com/forum/topics/2012-tv-ratings-and-attendance-thread-updated-through-st-pete?commentId=2007534:Comment:148580&xg_source=activity[/quote]

There were 140,000+ at Baltimore last year.

Do you actually believe there were 140,000 paid spectators watching that race? Those numbers are gross exaggerations based on 3 day totals where the same person is counted 3 times if they go all 3 days.
