Infield Camping at Michigan International Speedway

Hey, we're thinking about bringing our family to camp in the racetrack soon, and we were wondering if it's a family-friendly environment. We are looking at turn three but not sure if that matters. A friend said that when he went some years ago that there was a lot of very adult partying going on, including nudity, drunkenness and profanity. Would it be an ok place to bring a 6-year old nowadays? Or is it not a good place for children? Obviously once you are there you're pretty stuck.

Thanks in advance :)

It has been several years since I camped in the infield at MIS so I don't know if things have calmed down or not. We used to camp in the middle of the field so we could see the entire track from atop the motorhome.

The infield becomes like a small city at night as it is quite large but since interest and attendance have fallen off I expect it is less crowded. At night there were always plenty of drunks, bad language, loud music and some nudity so if I brought a 6 year old I would make sure he/she stayed confined to your camping area. A lot depends on who you are camping around too as when we went up it was with several other and we parked the motorhomes and travel trailers in a circle and had a fire pit in the middle.

Definitely check with the track or perhaps someone else on here has more current info then what I have. If it was me and based on my experience in the infield I would not bring a child in.

If you're getting grandstand tickets you could consider what we did. We attended the June Michigan race last year and stayed at Hayes State Park Campground. It's only six minutes from the track and is a great family friendly place to stay. It's on a lake with electricity clean restrooms and paved level campsites. You can pull up their website and check it out. You can make reservations online and they even have pictures of each site. I just looked and they have plenty of sites available but they might not last long.

been along time since I went, but as stated above, it is kind of like a small city. probably a lot of things going on that may concern a parent, but most was hidden or WAY late in the night. I never saw anything that I considered dangerous.

drunken behavior, foul language, exuberant discussions concerning driver flags flying over camp sights, etc. but what I saw was good natured fun. of course I was in my late 20's back then.

a lot depends on how well you are able to talk and explain what is absorbed by the child. I grew up an iowa farm boy. probably saw a lot of things before I should have. but nothing that has required a therapist. and then you have what kids are exposed to online now...

on the other hand, I can't imagine any better advice than what Johali posted.

just make the trip and have a great time. a 6 year old is likely to experience an event that will be a lifetime memory.

One thing I forgot to mention is that normally the weather is fine but every once in while it can get chilly so bring some sweat shirts and pants to be on the safe side.

Good God! What is wrong with the target demographic? Drunkenness, nudity, and fast cars. WTF? Who doesn't love that!?

Anymore, you can't go to any sporting event without experiencing these things. I've seen people cussing out opposing fans at baseball games, people smoking marijuana & collapsing drunk at college football games, and people showing of their assets in the stands at NASCAR races. I don't have a kid, so it doesn't faze me. But it is a sad commentary on our culture in general.

There are always people who buy a ticket for something and feel it gives them the right to behave in anyway they see fit. If a person doesn't go along with the moral relativism that is rampant today they are considered the odd person. It is no wonder we are in the state we are in.

Infield isn't kid or prude friendly. Especially at night. Also there are people who blast music at ear shattering volumes all day long. Being parked next to one them would suck. I did the infield thing 12 or so years ago and it was fun but I enjoyed staying at a campsite outside of the track and using a bicycle to get around much more.
