CONCORD, N.C. -- NASCAR on Monday announced a wide-ranging initiative to transform the sport’s competition division, an effort that over the next year and a half will touch everything from the rule book to how teams roll through inspection at the race track.

NASCAR Senior Vice President for Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell said the initiative intends to build on the success of the Generation-6 car by further modernizing the sport’s competition group. The goal is to make NASCAR more proactive in areas such as rule enforcement, and strengthen the bonds between the sanctioning body and participants such as race teams and manufacturers.

"Success of the gen 6 car"
Denny Hamlin broke his neck, you can't pass, and 2 drivers are dominating the field.
Define "success" for me

Success ... the fans like seeing a body style that looks like what they drive , the maufacturers like having a body style that looks like what they are trying to sell. The racing product is produced by the teams and drivers .It is what it is , different every week. I love it .

Looks like penalties are going to be based on an objective system now:

Motor Racing Network @MRNRadio
Updated #NASCAR Rule Book will list what the penalty is for what infraction, Steve O'Donnell says. #AskMRN @MRNRadio

Nascar needs to involve the manufacturers and teams in creating the rules package and the penalties . Just continually escalating fines is shortsighted. I would love to see what Chad Knauss and Joe Gibbs could come up with.

Have you seen all the empty seats? Have the ratings gone back up?

And that's because of what , the colour of the cars ? the body styles ? Jimmie Johnson ? I was talking with a heavyweight boxing fan today who hasn't seen a boxing match since Mike Tyson was champion . Lots of sports are suffering .

I remember everyone saying how the sport was coming back this year because of the new car!!!!!

Like everything else in this world today , oversold . Grossly oversold. Every time I hear the words 'To serve You Better " , I turn around and bend over.

They are just tightening the noose a little tighter on their spec car. If they come out with a rule book it will cost money to see it.

Who the heck wants to pay for a rule book that's obsolete before it's even printed . Nascar is finding new stuff every week , they had to make a new rule for roof flap spacers last week . How would you like to have a rule book with no rule in it for roof flap spacers ? Garbage .

None of the changes seem that significant, however if I am impnterperting correctly and theres actualy a written rule book than awesome.

You will have to buy the new and revised version 2...then 3, 4, ad nauseum.

Yes, that was very disturbing to read and confirms that nascar central lives in lala land..

There's these little sheets of paper called addendum's that they give out all the time.

The only thing keeping NASCAR is fan loyalty to their driver. Most fans disapprove of the chase. who the **** came up with the idea of having a playoff system where disqualified teams still compete?! They agree NASCAR tries to rig races with phantom debris cautions. It takes FOREVER for merchandise from the online store to reach your doorstep. Speaking of online don't even get me started on their piss poor website. Ratings drop because a majority of fans only have basic cable. No ESPN or TNT races for them, so they miss half the season. I'm luckily savvy enough to stream it online. Ticket prices are ridiculously overpriced. The actual racing, which if the cars get any more safety changes it won't be racing, is the only thing keeping us interested. If NASCAR wants to get back on track they need to listen to their fans, not their wallets.

What do you mean by this? Are you excited by the potential for driver injury?

Watkins Glen is the closest track to my home; 2 tickets for turn 1 would cost me $150+ and I assume it's more for the frontstretch but they're sold out on the website. And of course the majority of the time I'd be viewing the race on a jumbotron anyway - no thank you! It would be cool to go to a race and see the cars live and in person, but money is a sparse commodity for a college student, as well as for the average American. High prices for tickets when you could just stay home and view the race from an air-conditioned room in a comfy chair + listen to team radio just like you get to do at the track + cheap beer and snacks = low race attendance, IMO.

Of course not. NASCAR was built around the excitement of the potential for a wreck, not the actual wreck. It's the thrill of the show. Everyone is happy the sport is as safe as its ever been but this sport will never be 100% safe and the more NASCAR pushes for that impossibility, the less actual racing will occurr. Take plate racing for example. Got the engines too restricted and certain aero packages - absolutely no racing until 10 laps to go and even then it still sucks.

Ah, gotcha. I misunderstood what you meant, sorry!

Nascar became too greedy, but they have made strides in the last year and a half or so to make the sport better. The Gen 6 car is certainly better than its' predecessor, it has only been half a season and I think the racing is much better than it was last year. I'm a harsh critic, especially when it comes to the plate tracks, but overall I'd say Nascar has listened to most of the complaints and addressed some issues, not all that is for sure, but they are heading in the right direction. If they just could get it right for Dega and Daytona then we'd have something. They need to give them back the rear spoiler, restrict the engines less so they can get away from each other, then the drafting will be like it should be. It amazes me that they won't do it, all because the risk of the cars getting airborne. Well hell they get airborne at lower speeds too and there are plenty of other tracks where they go faster now than they do on the plate tracks. Makes absolutely no sense to have the package they presently have for plate racing. The fans will watch these races more and more fans will in turn be attracted to Nascar if Daytona is actually a good race again. I see that as the biggest problem because it is Nascars' showcase event. Fix it and you will see the stands at other tracks fill up more too, that and lowering the prices of concessions and tickets.

I keep hearing that by removing the plates , the cars will seperate . It seems to me that the plates reduce the air to every carb equally . Increasing the air to every carb equally should make every car in the field faster by exactly the same amount . All that will do is increase the danger to drivers and fans . It is more likely the wall of air that the cars hit at 200mph than bunches the cars together. Just old ,fat guy ramblings , not an angineer.

I expect lots of bold talk and posturing from the Frances, but no concrete changes that need to be done. Namely, kill the 1.5's, roll out a slower and less aero GEN7 and get back to true short track racing.

Damn FB you forgot the rear window again, must still be nut hurt. :D

Why get rid of the 1.5s, to me that makes no sense? Tweeking the Gen6 car so it runs better on these tracks is far more practical and after just a half of year, seriously what do you expect out of this car? A few more short tracks added to the schedule would be nice, take away a date from a couple of the tracks that have 2 would make sense. Give Darlington back their second race, give Iowa a date maybe. If Cup were to go back to primarily a short track series it would look like a late model touring series, which wouldn't be bad, but it would completely lose its' identity in the modern age if that were to occur. I still feel Nascars' biggest problem lies on the plate tracks and until they improve the racing on those 2 tracks to where it is actually "racing", we will continue to have incidents that mar the sport IMO. There is an easy solution to the plate problem, but France continues to bury his head in the sand rather than address it.

1.5's will always be aero dependent. These cars need to slow down and actually race rather than do the momentum roll all day.

It seems like every week we have this same discussion . Frankly , I find it somewhat confusing . Mile and a halfs ...Field too spread out...no side by side racing ...what to do ? Super speedways .....field too bunched together ,no seperation, ....what to do ? .:windows: Watch golf ?

That hasn't happened lately.

The field bunching up was, is and will likely always be a problem with golf as well...start&parks everywhere, I suppose.
