Is Jimmie Johnson's dominance good for NASCAR?

I really think that the answer to that question depends on who you ask. Duh! But what I mean by that is if you ask a relatively new fan, you might get a totally different "type" of answer than if you asked someone who has been a fan of NASCAR for over 20 years.

Personally, coming from one of the older fans, I don't think it's his dominance that is hurting the sport. There is so much more to it than that, but he and his persona doesn't help at all. I remember when people complained about how Matt Kenseth was such a bore after he won his title. These days, one seldom hears anything about Matt. If and when Jimmie comes down off that winning dominance, people will find something else to complain about certain drivers. Through the years we have seen dominant drivers and I'm sure the sport will always have them. However, and here's where the differences come in, the sport began to change in the 90's and as many here can attest, it just isn't the same sport it used to be.

Very true Buck. Cookie cutter cars on cookie cutter tracks driven by cookie cutter drivers who between all of them combined barely have the personality of a knat.

Yeah but the sport is many times more popular, has millions more fans, consequently purses are extremely large, we don't have to miss a race, they are all televised, even qualifying and practice are televised. So there are some perks for us, and how do you go back to the tiny little regional sport that it used to be?

When Petty was winning everthing except the lottery everyone hated him. When SR was winning everyone hated him. Yarborough won three in a row..... And everyone hated him.

Jimmie IS good for the sport. The sad thing is people are bored with him now.

Some people say we have to change the rules so JJ doesn't win any more titles. Me, I say :bsflag:

Let them race.

kenseth was boring finishing with top 5's and 10's. jimmy is boring winning races. still boring but a heck of a difference in where they placed while being boring. <g>

This is such a true statement. The reason is because NASCAR took for granted the fans who built the sport. They felt screwing with tradition (i.e. Darlington race moved to Calif, points system, taking away North Wilks, etc.) was a better move, and it has come back to bite them.
