There is a rumor floating around that the Redskins and Broncos are in serious negotiations involving a trade. According to reports, the Broncos would send Portis (a 1,500 yard rusher in his first 2 seasons in the league) to the Redskins for Champ Bailey and possibly a 2nd round draft pick. Champ Bailey is regarded as one of the best cover cornerbacks in the game. Portis would be a huge addition to Joe Gibbs run-oriented offensive philosophy. If it goes through, the Redskins stand to get some huge salary cap relief as Bailey will count for over $6 mil on this years salary cap. Portis counts for about $1 million as he is a 3rd year player who was a 2nd round pick. Agents for several free agent running backs who approached the Redskins about their clients were told "No thanks. We have a blockbuster deal in the works for a great running back"
If this does go through, I think it is a great deal for the Redskins. They get a very good, very young running back and save about $5 million a year. They can take the money they save and sign a very good free agent cornerback (like Ty Law if he is released for salary cap reason as is speculated in New England).
