Interview with Brian France

The CEO of NASCAR didn't even watch the race? LMFAO

No wonder he thinks everything is all good, he's not even watching......

The psart that got me was:
Q: Do you get the sense the fans watching on TV are seeing that? Some will say they don’t see all the action. So when you say the competition is really good they might disagree?

BRIAN FRIANCE: “I think what the case is you have certain drivers like Carl Edwards who has not, although he made the Chase, he hasn’t won a race and he was developing his fan base, won so many times and ran up front most of last year, has not done that this year. Dale Jr. obviously has not performed the way he wants to perform. It’s very driver specific. Those two guys represent a lot of fans, especially Dale Jr. If they’re struggling, it’s easy to say the racing is not as good as I think it should be. If my football team is not winning, I would think the league is not having as good of a year too. That’s normal.

So, I think the reason that the races are less than spectacular is because "My Driver" isn't winning? I guess he's got a point, in an odd sort of way. It's been years since I've seen Curtis Turner or Tim Richmond in Victory Lane!

Gawd! What a clueless PUTZ!

I'm hoping he saw it in person but....... he should still be looking at what we are all complaining about:eek2:

Well, you know what said about the 3rd generation of rulers.

You get 2 strong, but the 3rd usually sucks.

With Bill Sr I agree with you. Bill Jr... Not so much. Brian is...? Well, he just is, and for the sake of the sport I wish he wasn't.

Brian France = Nero. At least Nero watched Rome while it was burning.

Brian France = Nero. At least Nero watched Rome while it was burning.

Quick history lesson:

It's a common mis-conception that Nero was playing the fiddle while Rome burned during the Great Fire in 64 AD. It has since come to represent government leaders who do nothing during times of crisis.

In any case, according to historical records it was not possible for Nero to actually see Rome burning because he was in Antium (now known as Anzio) at the time. When he learned of the fire in Rome, he returned to the city and organized a huge relief effort using his own money.

He opened his palace to house people that were made homeless in the fire, and arrange for large shipments of food to be sent to Rome to help the survivors. Finally, Nero made new building codes to prevent another fire like this from happening again. Rubble was cleared, and new houses were built farther apart, and made of stone.

He was still a tyrant that ordered the executions of many people, but in this particular case he showed his strong leadership abilities during a crisis. Also, the fiddle wasn't even invented at the time this happened.

To be fair to Brian France, he never said he didn't watch the race. The question was is if he was disappointed by what the ABC commenators said about the race. His exact response was "I didn't see it. I really didn't see all of it."

Being the CEO of the company, I'm sure he doesn't have the time to sit there and watch the race. He's probably too busy hosting sponsors, and other important people. Assuming he's actually at the track. However, in light of all of the complaints about the race I'm sure he's seen the race since then if he didn't see it live.

I'm not saying I approve of what he's done. I'm just saying that I think people are taking his quote out of context.

Good effort on the historical data, but from what I learned (too many years ago, I fear) is that the public works efforts you note were instrumental in the deflation of that era and the ruination of the Roman economy.

Also, when they mention "Fiddle" in the saying, I believe they probably mean lyre, which predates Nero by a few centuries.

Back to topic: I agree 100% with your statement about taking Brian out of context. That was the way his "I didn't see all of it" statement struck me, too (and I'm not Brian France apologist). However, I still think his quote, which I previously gave, is 100% bull crap.

Thanks for the history correction.

Well, yeah, there were definately negitive after-effects from his plans. I was just making a point that somehow Nero got blamed for doing nothing while Rome burned, which really wasn't the case. A lot of historians think that rumors of him playing the fiddle really ment he was playing the lyre, which you are correct did exist at the time. Probably the result of verbal history changing the facts.

But, I think that wasn't the right thing for Brian to say. Even though it seems like it is being taken out of context, it still makes him seem like an ass. The race and the comments made about it are a major topic in the sport, and for him to say he hasn't see it, makes him seem out of touch.

I understand he's the face of NASCAR, but sometimes it's the little things that matter the most. Things like going down into the stands, and sitting with the people who drive the sport. Maybe buying someone a beer, or giving a random family access to Victory Lane post-race. Even if he isn't the best leader, at least showing the fans you appreciate them, instead of saying their opinion of the race is wrong, would go a long way to improving his image.

And that's what his father and grandfather understood in spades. The fans came first.

And that's what made Humpy Wheeler so successful. He was always in the stands.

I met Eddie Gossage at Texas almost every year --- roaming under the stands, talking to the fans. After every race, I always wrote him a letter --- outlining things that could have been done better, pointing out things that were done beautifully, suggesting ways to improve. I always got a handwritten letter/note in response.

Excellent points! NA__AR is [supposed to be] a fan-driven sport. Brian is the voice of the new NA__AR but he has yet to be linked to the positive personality of it. He's more of a boardroom-type leader, and since he's lost his voting stock in ISC, he isn't even much of that.

I personally think Jim France would be a much better leader of NA__AR than Brian.

What about this guy? ;)

I laugh out loud every time I see the commercial "This is my Na$car etc".
Shows how much interest the CEO has if he doesn't watch the race(s).
