From the article:

"NEWTON — There seems to be a growing divide between a couple types of race fans across the country.

Dirt racing fans who follow their local driver or family member from track to track each weekend are less and less professing interest and dedication to NASCAR. Often the refrain from that group has been that the changes and racing style don’t connect to them like they used to; that marketing and advertising no longer are geared toward the lifelong fan, but rather attracting new ones.

Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small knows that’s the case in Iowa, too. Reconnecting local racing fans to NASCAR is not only a priority, it’s vital to his track’s success. Entering his fourth season in charge of the 7/8-mile track and facility, Small has a lot on his mind to fill the grandstands again." ....

Well Iowa is a boring track, copying Richmond was a terrible idea.

Yeah no not sarcasm it's never produced a good race.

Richmond or Iowa?"

Not that it matters.

My intent, highlighted in bold, was to show once again that one of the reasons for all those empty seats we see every weekend is NASCAR's abandonment of what used to be a very stong fan base.

Iowa

Yeah and drivers like Richmond which produced years of bad races until they went to daytime.

So in the OP the bolded stood out to me in regards to Dirt racing. I personally love dirt tracks. I used to prefer asphalt, but what I found over the years is that it became sooooo expensive for guys to compete on asphalt that the competition was not very good. We have a local asphalt track here that draws 25 late modes once a month for a $2000 to win purse with a $5k and a $10k race to start and end the season as well. The series is well done and it is televised on MavTV, but the problem they are running into is that out of the 25 there are only 5 cars on a given night that are really competitive. You get a lot of drivers who have no business being in a full sized LM and when it gets 3 wide they seize up and wreck the field.

When we go to a dirt race we see elbows up, hard nosed, clean racing from 20+ car fields that on any given day could produce 10-12 cars with a chance to win. I know affordability is a big part of that. Guys put money in the right places and make the cars handle better whereas on asphalt these guys are having to kill their budget just for tires that they are going to burn off in 50 laps. It kills me because on stickers on a 1/3 mile oval you do not gain an advantage over the field. These guys pump HP through the tires and burn them up in half the race. This season I have only attended a single asphalt race because I am just losing interest in the series.
