Well, I know its been talked about quite a bit but the merger between these 2 series may become a reality and possibly soon.

New Reports are stating that Indy Car President Tony George has approached the owners of the ChampCar World Series with a very strong offer.

ChampCar owners appear to be happy with this deal. Below is the deal that the IRL has offered ChampCar

1. Free Dallara chassis.
2. Free Honda engines.
3. These ChampCar races at Long Beach, Toronto, Edmonton, Mexico City and Australia would be absorbed into the 2008 IndyCar schedule.

If it doesnt happen this year, good chance for 2009.

Most people that follow this form of racing seem to think a merger will happen this year. I know ChampCar has made some subtle changes to head in that direction. I think it's well past time for these two to become one.

agreed:beerbang:

The only thing that has me suspicious of the merger is the fact that they say George approached Champ Car. I would rather think it would be Champ Car begging the IRL.

It probably wont happen this year but I believe its a good possibility of 2009.

Because today they offically announced Tony Cotman as the vice president of competition for the IRL. He will be assisting Brian Barnhart. In case anyone doesnt know, Tony was the executive vice president of ChampCar until he quit about a month ago.

Cotman was quoted as saying.. “I’m just going where I think the future of open-wheel racing is going to be.”

Which leads you to think that he doesn't think a merger will happen.

They just had an update on the SPEED report with Robin miller but spoke so fast, I didn't retain it. Varsha said the two sides were mad that media "that would be you, Robin" varsha said, was leaking this to the media.

Then Miller said that one guy with Champ who's name I can't remember (starts with V??) EDIT: Kalkhoven leaked the story a couple years ago to the press...and what Robin has mentioned so far would affect neither side....so I do hope it happens.

I think he said Tony George had gone to Japan to discuss the issue but I am sure somebody else can set me straight on that.

Would love to see it happen, if for no other reason than to bring some meaning back to the Indy 500. Having both series there would be a great boon to this once-great race.

Ok is the Champ cars the cars that split when IRL was formed? I am confused on this. I don't know alot about open wheel cars.. I do remember the Indy car league splitting and forming IRL.

yea Champ car and IRL were origionally the origional Indy Racing LEague.

Actually, Champ Car World Series, CCWS was formed when CART went bankrupt. IRL was started as a means to get American drivers racing on ovals. CART was the organization that treid to run the show, and was comprised of the Indry Car race team owners, who got too greedy, tried to play their own game when George formed the IRL.

Sources: Negotiations on open-wheel merger continuing
By John Oreovicz
www.ESPN.com

Constituents with a stake in American open-wheel racing are still waiting to see if the most advanced discussions to date between the Indy Racing League and the Champ Car World Series result in the two groups racing under one umbrella in 2008 and beyond.

High-level sources from both series confirmed to ESPN.com that negotiations continue. But with the IndyCar Series opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway only 41 days away, time is becoming a critical factor.

"If something is going to happen it will have to be soon," noted an emissary with inside knowledge of the talks.

Progress has been hampered by the fact that two of the key figures involved in the process have been or will be out of the country. IRL founder Tony George is expected to return to the U.S. Sunday from London, where he traveled to attend 2003 IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon's wedding. Meanwhile, Champ Car co-principal Kevin Kalkhoven left for his own three-day trip to England on Sunday to attend a family function.

"We continue to see advantages in a merger with the IRL," Kalkhoven said prior to his departure. "Equally, we are quite happy to go it alone. At the moment, we're going Champ Car racing."

It is believed the two competing race series have reached an agreement in principle to work together and lawyers are toiling to hammer out the details for final approval. But several key issues, including the date for the IndyCar Series race at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan and the level of support that will be given to teams, remain unresolved.

"Things are progressing, but [the process is] delicate and complicated," George stated to ESPN.com in e-mail correspondence.

The nine teams that expected to compete in Champ Car this year are in limbo, awaiting information whether they will have to frantically gear up to race in the IndyCar Series. Champ Car's Panoz chassis and turbocharged Cosworth engines are not compatible with the IRL's single-seat formula, which utilizes a chassis made by Italian firm Dallara and normally aspirated Honda engines.

Meanwhile, existing IndyCar Series teams expressed mixed reactions about the possibility of Champ Car being merged into the IRL.

At Daytona International Speedway, leading team owner Roger Penske said he supported the proposed open-wheel unification and told the St. Petersburg Times he would go so far as to provide incoming Champ Car teams with "an extra car or pieces in order to get them going." Penske switched the open-wheel portion of his racing operation from the then CART-sanctioned Champ Car series to the IRL full-time in 2002.

However, A.J. Foyt, who has competed in the IRL since its 1996 start-up and has longstanding ties to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Hulman-George family, is vehemently opposed to Champ Car teams receiving assistance from the IRL in order to make the transition between series.

"I would throw a damned fit and would want to damned near pack up my bags if that was all true," Foyt fumed during a panel discussion with former Daytona 500 winners. "And I think a lot of people that have been loyal to [the IRL] would do the same thing because it just wouldn't be right for people who had to buy and spend a lot of money."

AJ Foyt has never changed! ;)

Well, it looks like its official now...

Officials from the Indy Racing League and Champ Car World Series struck a preliminary agreement Tuesday to fold elements of the Champ Car World Series into the IRL IndyCar Series.
An official announcement is expected Thursday.

There are a minimum of 8 cars from ChampCar to be added to the IRL grid this year. So the number of cars will be at least 24. Much better.

The teams that are definite from ChampCar are..

Newman/Haas/Lanigan - 2 cars
PKV - 2 cars
Forsythe - 2 cars
Walker - 1 Car
Conquest - 1 car

There will most likely be 19 races on the 2008 schedule.

This is great news! They just mentioned it on Nascar Now (Tim Cowlishaw I think?)

I looked up Robin Miller and he has a column dated today at 1.30 AM confirming things!

WOW. This is HUGE and I am so happy to hear this. :)

CART originally had a bug up it's butt back 1979 and split from USAC. If these 2 series don't settle their differences soon there's not going to be any open wheeled big leagues in the US.

The official announcement is scheduled to take place Friday, Feb. 22 at 11:00am

Where did you hear Friday at 11am

First I heard Wed, then Thursday and now Friday. IS IT a done deal? I hope so.

:)

I live near Indianapolis so I hear all the latest from the IRL and IMS. Yeah, you can mark it down as a done deal.

Right now, the latest buzz is that the Indy Car race at Twin Ring Motegi and the ChampCar race in Long Beach will be going on the same weekend. If this is the case, this will be the last race for the panoz cosworths. It seems that the Twin Ring cant switch in October like it wanted due to the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.
No matter which race, a driver runs, both races would count in the championship points for the merged series. Im sure if this happens, you will see the IndyCars running at Twin ring obviously and ChampCar running at Long Beach. However, if a champcar driver doesnt have much oval experience, then would be a good time for them to run at the Twin Ring to get some experience.

If this happens, its a crazy mishap and a minor "bump" in the merged series but definitely no means to stop the merger because of it.

right. And we all know the long beach GP will NEVER go away, unless they start losing money over it.

Where does everyone hear about a merger. What I hear is that CHAMP is going 'kaput" and some of the teams will go with IRL and the IRL schedule will be increased a little. It really doesn't look like a merger, per se. It will still be the IRL and CHAMP will dissapear.

I heard merger, then a blending...heck, as long as the two get back together, we can learn what to call it. No more pitiful races with only 16 cars on the track and after bad crashes at IRL races last season, only what 8 or 10 cars would finish?

This is great news. I also hope they make the rookie test more difficult. Robin Miller and others say they make it way too easy for people to get in..thus the wrecks and unfortunate deaths that have happened.

WOW, i wish to hello WIND TUNNEL could have a two hour special to cover this on Sunday night. ONE HOUR is NOT enough of that show. Heck he deserves THREE hours in my book.

:D

Its official now! This coming out of IMS (Indianapolis Motor Speedway)..

Indy Racing League founder and CEO Tony George and owners of the Champ Car World Series have completed an agreement in principle that will unify the sport for 2008.
Gerald Forsythe, co-owner of Champ Car, signed an agreement in principle Feb. 22 in Chicago, joining his partner, Kevin Kalkhoven. George signed the agreement Feb. 21.

:bounce: :partytime :bounce: :partytime

I'm sooooo excited about going to Homestead this year!

Woo-Hoo!

I agree with akj. It's been a long time comming about time. Tony George is the reason open wheel racing in America is in the state it's in. If he had never done his 25 gauranteed positions deal back in 95, who knows where CART would be now. That decision killed CART and open wheel racing in the U.S. the way it was when the Unsers, Andretti's, Rutherfords, Mears, & Rahals were all racing together. I for one have never liked the idea of gauranteed racing positions, it's all about making the show. If you show up and aren't fast enough to make the race then oh well, try again next weekend. George was sooo upset about Rahal & then Team Penske missing Indy that he would make the decision that would ultimately doom the series. I do not like the look of the IRL car, looks too much like an F1 car with that intake over the ****pit. CART was our F1 and he killed it, for that I am one fan who will never forgive him. Who knows what would've happened in those Indy 500's after the split, Zanardi might have been a very dominant driver at Indy had he been able to race there. What about the Indy 500's that Mike Andretti missed, he may have won one of those who knows. Well, whatever they plan doing, they need to hurry up, the season's for both champcar & the IRL is right around the corner. I think they should srap the IRL cars and run the new champcars. The season should consist of 20 races of even road courses and ovals. Something like:

1. (February) Homestead Oval 300 miles
2. (March) Long Beach Grand Prix
3. (March) Sears Point Road Course
4. (April) Milwaukee Oval
5. (April) Phoenix Oval
6. (May) Indy 500
7. (June) Las Vegas Street Course
8. (June) Cleveland Airport
9. (June) Kentucky Oval
10. (July) Toronto Street Course
11. (July) Michigan 400
12. (July) Road America
13. (August) Chicago Oval
14. (August) Japan Motegi Oval
15. (September) Watkins Glen
16. (September) Fontana CA Oval
17. (September) Vancouver Street Course
18. (October) Australia Street Course
19. (October) Portland Road Course
20. (November) Laguna Seca

There ya go Tony, call it CART, bring back PPG & make the schedule like above and everything will be OK...

Well, the IndyCar Series held thier official press conference today down in Miami. All in all, we didnt learn much of anything new than what was already leaked out. This was the official announcement to confirm the merger and probably stop a lot of rumors.
The key points were that the following races will be added to the IRL schedule this year..

Edmonton, Alberta, Surfers Paradise Australia.

ChampCar teams will run at Long Beach this year during the same weekend that the IRL teams will be running at Twin Ring Motegi (April 18-20). This will be the last race that ChampCar uses the DP01 chassis, after this, its all Dallaras. Both events will count for the series championship points and prize money.

Conquest Racing was the only ChampCar team that was mentioned specifically for bringing a 2 car team for the season opener. Others are preparing at this time to be ready for the opener. I think the following teams will be confirming very soon...
PKV, Walker, Forsythe, and Newman/Haas.

Partial season teams announced were..
Thomas Scheckter -Luczo Dragon Racing
Sarah Fisher -Sarah Fisher Racing
Milka Duno - Dreyer & Reinbold Racing

Additionally, meetings are on-going with the following...

ChampCar teams wanting to make the switch
With ESPN for coverage of acquired events
With reps from the racing events that are to be acquired

Note: ChampCar Atlantics will still exist with a 12 race schedule

So, they're just adding those three races to the current IRL schedule?

I'm confused.

I printed off the IRL schedule and St Pete, Watkins Glen, Mid Ohio, and Infineon are on there. But no Edmonton, etc.

I think muggle has a whole list of tracks they should run at.
And a driver that also could be included.

btw magnethead, wait until you see the decal that will be on our truck. It will knock your socks off.
