Hooray for more shopping malls.

The House of Drift may be about to drift away off into the sunset--the Irwindale Event Center (formerly Irwindale Speedway), known for popularizing racecar drifting, has sold to developer Lindom Company, and the new owner says it plans to redevelop the 63.47-acre site. Car racing (including NASCAR) will stay on at the speedway through December 2014, according to a press release, and "Details of the future project will be released over the next several months." Seller Nu-Way Industries bought the land in 1966 and added a racetrack in 1998 and a drag strip in 2000; there's also a 6,000-square-foot racing center, seating for about 10,000, luxury suites, concessions, a tech garage, admin buildings, "and a large paved parking lot." The San Gabriel Valley Tribune says that Irwindale is "considered by many as the best short track in the nation." But it's also sitting on 63 "relatively flat, versatile" acres, which makes it pretty juicy for redevelopment. The buyer's rep says the buyer "has several ideas for future use." The event center has a year-to-year lease and a rep told the SGVT a few weeks ago that they could stay on past 2014.

Not shocked... Bummer though. What a cool little racetrack. Also the closest paved circle track to me.

That really sucks, its such a nice track. Nice enough to get Trucks or Nationwide IMO. Really wanted to get back there for a K&N race again someday. Was really hoping with the Battle at the Beach looking like its not happening again that they would bring it back to Irwindale in 2014 or 2015.

Talked to someone from Los Angeles who goes to Irwindale just about every race. He says there's no truth to these rumors that the track is closing.

It would be nice if he's right. Like toledo said, with Daytona's Superstretch seats gone soon it would be nice if they brought the showdown back out west.

The Battle at the Beach won't be back next year. From what I've heard, FOX Sports won't televise it if it is back - which defeats the purpose. The Showdown could return in 2015 if Irwindale is open and NBC wants it.
