Is he Kidding??

Matt Crafton has never made a Cup start and I think he deserves a chance. He's won the past 2 truck championships so he's no slouch. Johnny Sauter's had some good runs in the under-funded Phoenix racing car a few years ago. He's definitely a wheelman. They both deserve a shot in a competitive Cup car but I think they are happy racing for championships in the truck series.

Bonkowski wrote in a separate article that Kyle Busch "...wasn't exactly thrilled with the crew chief change." What do you call that ****? Erroneous? Irresponsible? I think you have to try to lie, so I won't speak to a person's intent, but holy ****, what planet is the dude from? Having said that, I like some of Jerry's stuff, but so much of it, he pulls out of his ass. BTW, KB simply expressed that JGR might be in need of some outside blood to gain additional perspective on the set up issues. JGR responded by hiring Todd Berrier. KB is very happy with the change and particularly the change to Adam Stevens. Reporting otherwise is such bull****. Must be nice to have a job with 0 accountability.

Back to topic....NOBODY deserves a Cup ride. NOBODY. Some get it, and take advantage of it. Some don't, and we never hear from them. Crapshoot that works some of the time.

I think Crafton wants to stay in the Trucks. He is a stud there with security. Not a bad living. I respect him for that.

Most of the guys in that slideshow have already driven in the Cup Series with less-than-desirable results. It's a crapshoot to speculate how drivers from NNS and CWTS would fare in Cup.

BINGO! You nailed it.

Remember Jack Sprague? Same caliber driver as Matt.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't he part owner of the team? Could have been the team that Bobby owned and his son tried driving for.
Dang CRS.

Only slide shows with hawt wimmin are worthy.

When the second page said Elliott Sadler, I stopped reading.

These may be the best drivers not currently in Cup, but it's more debatable that any of them deserve to move (back) up.

With Sadler's experience, if he couldn't win an N'wide title then teams are going to look for a driver with less miles on his tires.

Hornaday tried it with A. J. Foyt's start-up team. What was that, 15 years ago? Maybe he'd have done better with an established team, but I think he's finished.

Sauter? Smith? Gaughan? Crafton? Maybe, but Hornaday, Sprague, and Skinner had a bajizillion Truck titles between them. Their collective careers outside that series were less than memorable. Any of these four would make a great sub when your regular driver gets sick.

The best drivers not currently in Cup are Elliott, Blaney, and Wallace.

Crafton has had some of the best equipment in the series on a regular basis, betting that the cup series will hand him his ass

this^ it is one thing to be a big fish in a small pond, another when you move up to the top level. Way more failures than successes.

This reminds me of Randy Lajoie. He was highly successful in the Busch series, with two titles and without any desire to move up to Cup.

I agree completely. Good friends with KB.

Regan Smith is the only one that I agree with on this list.
Sadler, Gaughan, and Horanday had their chance
Crafton I think is going to stay in the trucks

I have not watched enough racing in the last year or so to comment on who should be in cup. However the primary means to success in cup is how popular you are with the fans and sponsors. Kenny Schrader, Kenny Wallace and Mikey Waltrip had long careers with little on track success and Danica Patrick is following the same model today. Coming from a wealthy family like Menard, Vickers and JLo doesn't hurt either.

Sadler reminds me of the Energizer bunny who keeps running and running. But never seems to go anywhere. He has lousy racing luck too.

I think you make your own luck, good or bad.

I didn't see one driver he listed who would do any good in the best equipment. Some of them did make it to cup and had good long term opportunities. Despite some drivers that aren't that great but have a name or solid sponsorship in cup..all series for that matter IMO, the cup level is pretty self cleaning. You don't perform on the track and jump thru the sponsor hoops, you aren't around for long on the better teams.

But some drivers have small sponsors and drive for poor teams and they keep their ride while drivers who are maybe better don't have a ride.
One driver that did little in cup was David in RFR equipment and he is still racing for a one dog team.

Nobody "deserves" a Sprint Cup ride, except those already there who earn it by running competitively.
Used to be that others could earn their way into a Sprint Cup ride, but lately it appears that one can buy his or her ride...
Hope that reverses soon based on what happened in Indianapolis style cars... particularly CART.

Stenhouse..don't know why he is still around, Jack and company holds on to some of them too long as far as I am concerned. If you have sponsor problems anyway, why keep a backmarker? Stuff a no name with potential in the car if you are footing the bill, that is what Haas is doing with Cole Custer in the trucks. He ran 9 races and won one of them with two poles. Try HIM Jack.

Yea, but even when he turns 18, he'll only have had 18 Truck Series starts. I still don't think he'd be ready to compete in Cup just yet by then. Maybe the year after he turns 18.
