Is NASCAR really broken?

The following is an excerpt from an article someone posted on the 26-10 thread. The article as a whole was very good. But this particular section raised some interesting questions to me.

If something as radical as the 26-10 Playoff system is needed to “add some drama and excitement to our season” then you’re overlooking the disease to concentrate on the symptoms. How is it the racing season as we’ve known it has become so lacking in drama and excitement that folks would rather watch a college football game than a Whatever Cup race? Is it possibly because NASCAR has allowed the cars to become so aerodynamically extreme it’s made passing all but impossible? Could it be those cars are so aerodynamic drivers are afraid to tweak their play-pretties rubbing fenders? Is it possible the plethora of multi-use single groove cookie-cutter tracks added to the schedule just don’t allow for exciting racing? Is it possible the cost of Cup racing has gotten so out of hand that half the cars entered in a race are behind the eight ball before they’re even unloaded off the truck Friday morning? Is it possible your drivers have become bland caricatures that spout the sponsor spiel in mind-numbingly robotic terms and don’t elicit much passion these days? Cure the disease and the symptoms will go away too. Give a man with broken a leg crutches and he’ll be able to make some forward progress. Heal his leg and one day he’ll run again.

I was getting sick of fuel mileage and aero push anyway. The answer is not some half baked playoff system. The answer is do something to increase actual competition. Lucky dog laps are not real competition. Copycatting Survivor and eliminating drivers is not real competition. Passing is real competition.

Yeah,it's the fault of too many boring cookie-cutter tracks and plate racing as well IMHO.Give the fans another 1 or 2 road courses and about 2 to 4 more short track events and the racing will definitely be much better IMO ;)

For what the teams and sponsors have spent on plate cars they could have fixed Daytona and Talladega so that they wouldn't need them. The single grove tracks should be fixed to allow side by side of dropped from the schedule. Put the passsing back in racing and people won't need to even think about a playoff system.

Couln't agree with you more 24Thunder. I'm so sick of all these 1.5 mile track. BORING. I love short track racing.

I think more restrictor plate races should be added at Daytona and Talladega. Lead changes almost every lap, tight racing, big wrecks. What more could you want?

I'd want to see perhaps an event moved from maybe Martinsville or Loudon, I have more fun seeing the race that comes out of my keyster than seeing those. Maybe build another Richmond or Phoenix style track. There were good races at those tracks this year, side-by-side races.

I like some of the so called cookie cutter tracks. The 1 1/2 mile. If there are at least 2 or 3 groovs to let then run and good passing. I like what they did to Homestead. Was a good race. I also like the short tracks like Bristol. Bristol is always a good race.

I think most (note I didn't say all) race fans would agree that short track racing is more entertaining and takes much more skillful driving.

The problem is that there is no money in building short tracks.

When anyone goes about building a new track they want several things. Such as tons of seats and the ability to host several different types of races at that venue to try to recoup their investment faster. You aren't going to see too many open wheel races at a 1/2 mile track no matter how nice the facility or track layout. Therefore, they would need quite a few NASCAR event every year to recoup their investment. That obviously isn't going to happen. If it was your money, you wouldn't build one either.

As far as the aero-stuff goes. I am getting sick of hearing about it. These guys can't drive like they used to. One bump on your front end and you are toast at many of these newer tracks.

If I never see one more race won on fuel mileage I could die a happy man.

agreed on never seeing another fuel-mileage race would be a great thing, especially so many in one season(2003),I fear though that this will become a commonplace occurance, unfortunately,I really hope that I'm way wrong here ;)

I hear U about the shortage of $$$$$$$$$$$$ and seats at a short track, but They still pack about 150,000+ fans in at Bristol, not too bad IMHO.I still would like to see another .625 mile short track similar to North Wilkesboro, and a road course like Riverside ;)

I know it wont happen,but a fan can dream,right?
