I live in El Paso so it's only 6 hours away, thinking of heading there for the November 10th race. For those that have been before how does it compare to other tracks? The main reason I'm considering not going is because there is no tent camping and that's usually the funnest part of race weekend.

I've never been to Phoenix but, on television, it's one of my favorite tracks. One of the best races in NASCAR.

Went to the track once as a kid. Believe it was 99' where we were sitting(after the dogleg going into 3) we could barely see the scoring pylon and I actually didn't know the race was over until Tony Stewart was the only one on the track(lol).

Those seats might be torn down now. I think the track is better now after the reconfiguration and I'm pretty sure the fan experience has improved greatly since then as well. The traffic might still be a nightmare though.. I'd recommend the drive, sit on the frontstretch or on the hill.

Or go to Texas instead? That'd be closer right?

Phoenix is a great track and a lot of great fans. I usually dont care much for the chase race there but will be there anyway. The NW race is the one I really enjoy the most.

Those seats are all gone now

Went to the Texas race in the Spring, been there 5 times now. Believe it or not Phoenix is a lot closer than DFW. Texas is a big ass state, takes 6 hours to Phoenix and 8.5 to Fort Worth. I'll probably go because I just looked at my work calendar and I have a 4-day weekend for Vets day so no reason at all not too.

Oh yeah I forgot about that! Drove across the southern part of the country west to east once. Thought I was making good time going through El Paso at 8 am, ended the day in Kilgore, TX at like 9 pm. Thought I was in a time warp. Haha

I actually thought about it when I saw it earlier today, I can't swing a 2 day drive to and from right now though...

The last time I was there was before the repaved it and tweaked the dogleg.. It was great racing and I think the new track invites better racing. I would recommend sitting near turn 2 or 4 preferably higher up. If your looking to make a trip out of it try staying near Scottsdale or Tempe, lots of killer night life and smoking hot chicks. Look into the shuttle buses, they are really convenient

I went to Phoenix back in 2002, went to Friday nights' Truck race, then the Cup race on Sunday, I loved it, great track and it wasn't hard to get in and out of. Be prepared for it to be warm though, even in Nov.

It sure would have been cool to be there last fall with the whole Bowyer-Gordon dust up. I'd say go for it!

Phoenix is a great track. I'd go there in a second if I was close.

I've never been but I have friends who have & they all said they sat on the hillside next to the track & they loved it...

Yeah get yourself a seat on "rattlesnake hill"...but don't let the name scare you, it's more of a mound or a mesa than an actual hill.:D

Don't they send guys up there the week before to clear out the rattlesnakes ?

Thanks for all the feedback. Gonna buy my tickets tonight, will post a summary after race weekend. Moving back to Central Texas in December so I'll only have a two hour drive to Texas Motor Speedway. For those that haven't been it is a great track to camp at especially now that the spring race is at night.

Have a good time. Many of us here are very envious :)

When I first read this, I thought it said "Is Phoenix Racing worth going to". Guess you'll hafta ask Justin Allgaier ;)

Yes, the Phoenix race will be worth going to, imo. (Or any NASCAR race, for that matter.)

Yeah, maybe there isn't any on track camping allowed, but there is a park located on the west side of PIR that has been known to allow overnight campers to set up, or so I've been told. I only live 15 mins from the track and get to sleep in my own bed, so I can't confirm that.

I will tell you, however, that the Houston Texans will be in town to take on my Az Cardinals. The Cards stadium and PIR are located on the same side of town and a ton of folks will be heading west on the I-10 to attend either.

Get there early if you choose to not camp out. A lot of uninformed people are going to miss the first 30 laps of the NASCAR race or the 1st qtr of the local NFL game.
You can take that one to the bank.

Can't wait, man.

Edit:

I meant on track "tent" camping.
I will say, though, I've tailgated many a time with someone who slept overnight in their vehicle in the general parking dirt lot prior to the Cup race.
You might give that a try if all else fails.
