Is spelling and grammar important?

I think some could try a little harder to communicate their points. Typos are one thing, but some of these posts are very difficult to read.

I think if people can figure out what they are saying without slowing their reading pace, then its fine with me. But people shouldn't be critized for misspelling a word.

I will admit I am the worst speller here!!! Hint the name i put under the AKA Mr. Typo

66, I don't think DE was referring to misspelling a word or two. It is the ones that give the appearance that the typers fingers were in the wrong place on the keyboard when they were typing their post. (i.e. jsbr s hppg gsu - have a good day) You can usually get what the poster was trying to say, but sometimes you have to read it several times. JMO

I'll admit sometimes I get a bad case of the heebie-jeebies when I read some posts --- want to correct the spelling, grammar, and punctuation so bad my fingers itch.

Most errors could be caught by the poster if they would re-read their post before hitting submit. Sometimes the meaning of a post can be misunderstood simply because punctuation is missing. That can lead to hurt feelings and arguments.

I sometimes feel the same way myself, TRL. Spelling and punctuation is one of my pet peeves, and I wasn't even a teacher.:p

I know I try to be aware of my grammer, But a lot of times I don't use apostrophes or capital letters:eek:

Just so everyone knows........my intent was not embarrass anyone nor to "correct". I just wanted to know if anyone thought spelling and grammar was important. We have had some lively debates (arguments) in the last few days.......btw, I enjoy those.:) But, I noticed on a couple occassions that someone typed a post that, in turn, was mostly misunderstood. Not necessarily because of misspelling if the word was close, but mostly because of poor sentence structure. And, as TRL just stated......someone got defensive or angry because what was meant was not what was perceived. I'm not talking about the chat room lingo everyone is very familar with or the omission of capitals, punctuation (within reason........sometimes a well placed comma or period changes the whole meaning of a sentence or thought.). I'm talking about when someone has what they think is an important thing to say should at least try to spell the key words correctly......take to time to make sure the sentence really says what they are intending it to say. I believe it would help a great deal toward avoiding misunderstandings that sometimes lead to needless digressions from the topic being discussed.

Even in my blue collar line of employment, spelling and grammar very often make a difference in avoiding mistakes.

Just my feelings........thanks for the responses.

Thanks breadtrk.........just downloaded it. BTW, guys I scanned it with Norton 2003 Pro Antivirus.........it's clean.:D

Think it will require shutting down IE to install so I'm going to jump out for a bit to install it.......talk a little later.:)

OK, just installed it........that went smoothly and the download is the most recent release. No updating necessary.

Hey, it works too!!:D All these years I though OK was spelled okay!!:) It fixed it.

Not to be picky but, shouldn't that read "Are spelling and grammer important"?

Probably 4X............I admitted I was far from an expert at the very beginning. But I could make a case about the two being treated as a single subject........that would make the "is" correct. So point taken.

I wasn't trying to be an @hole or anything, just wondering. And trying for a little bit of humor. Perhaps it was too little.

Hope you don't think I took any offense what ever 4X. A very good observation and once you mentioned it, I saw exactly what you were saying. But, the point of my thread was to find out if people thought spelling and grammar were important. Seems I got my answer.........I'll get some ribbing for a bit from some, I'm sure.:)

I have always had trouble spelling, but I keep a dictionary beside the puter at all times.
The spell check is a good idea, but most times the word used is a correct spelling. (hear and here for example) I have seen this many times on this board.

4X's post a few minutes ago sort of makes my point. One word can, and often does, change the meaning of the whole sentence or thought. I only posted the thread to get an idea of who thinks its important. I, too, have a dictionary next to my computer.......as well as that spell checker (which I think is rather good for the price!!). But putting a sentence together to get whatever thought you want to convey is something else.

I see so many misunderstandings that sometimes lead to unneccessary arguments and digressions that I just wanted to know who cares. :)

Almost (but not quite) sorry I started the thread.:)

It actually matters quite a bit to me, but then I have been told I'm obsessive compulsive.

It matters a little to me. I have my own problems with spelling and grammar so I tend to be understanding to others with similar problems. However, when it gets to be really bad it can be distracting. I think remembering that not everyone is the best speller or a grammar genius makes me forgive the mistakes. And hopefully allows others to do the same with me when I do something atrocious.

Spelling and grammar are important to me, even tho I do misspell intentionally sometimes (like tho).

Run-on sentences with no caps or punctuation make me nuts!

I (as well as Alaska) had some wonderful English teachers in HS.

The IF-was thing drives me crazy!

If I WERE to go to the store, would I buy a purse? NOT if I was.

As to the "y'all" "ya'll" thaing, dad gum it, I believe it is "y'all" with the apostrophe to substitute for the missing ou in you.
"y'all" is singular, and if you were to address more than 1 person, it should be "All y'all", IMHO, with love and PURRRs from GA.
