Is this why SHAD told Jimmie to crack the rear end




FORT WORTH, Texas – More than a half a dozen Sprint Cup teams going through inspection on Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway were told by NASCAR inspectors they would have to add additional braces to their rear deck lids.

NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said the deck lids were legal, but inspectors noticed some deflection on some. The additional braces would prevent any deflection.

In theory, a deflecting rear deck lid would be like having a deflecting and movable rear spoiler, which could provide an aerodynamic advantage.

wait a minute here. legal is legal! who gives a $hit whether they like it or not.
 
What the hell is deflection? Are we talking a flexible part that changes it's properties at different speeds?

It's just sheet metal, so it bends quite a lot. Remember how the hoods acted before teams started sealing the edge near the windshield? It would bend and flex like it was made of rubber.

Since the spoiler is attached to the trunk lid, I'm guessing it would become an adjustable spoiler. At higher speeds, it would bend back and reduce drag. In slower turns, it would come back and give you the downforce you need in the turns.

If you think back several years before the "Old COT" car when we had a spoiler on the "Twisted Sister" cars NASCAR would set a minimum spoiler angle and test it with a angle meter at the restrictor plate tracks. The teams then started building flex into the spoilers and rear deck lids to get around the spoiler angle rule, so NASCAR began hanging a weight on the spoiler and measureing the angle getting rid of the "Flex Factor".
Now that where back to running a "Spoiler Car" again some teams have been allowing rear deck lids to flex, allowing the rear spoilers to have less angle on the straightaways which gives less drag and then flex back up as the car slows in the corners to improve rear bite coming off. Works well at the fast 1.5 miles Atlanta, Texas etc. and restrictor plate tracks.
Some of these guys are crafty lil buggers so NASCAR is haveing to set some limits.
