Gordon said he could have another driver in a Ford this year.
CONCORD, N.C. - Robby Gordon announced today that he will reunite with the Ford Motor Company to drive and field Ford Fusions starting in 2007.
Gordon made his NEXTEL Cup debut back in 1991 with Ford driving Junie Donlavey’s No. 90 to an 18th-place finish in the Daytona 500. Along with Cup racing Gordon also drove off-road trucks and a sports car for Roush racing. Gordon won four consecutive Rolex 24 at Daytona IMSA GTO Series class titles and a Trans-Am race at Long Beach in his early tenure with Ford.
“I had a lot of success with Ford early in my career, and I owe a lot to Ford,” Gordon said. “I think our NEXTEL Cup program is at the point now where we’re ready to take it to the next level. I would give ourselves a 15th-place car is about where we are at now and we're working to build with Ford is how to get back winning again."
Currently Robby Gordon Motorsports is constructing a new facility and with the lack of space in his current spot he feels that’s what is holding him back of forming a second team.
“We are a bit out of space where we are at,” Gordon said. “I would love to be able to run two today, but I’ll be honest if a sponsor came we would have to figure out how to do it for about five months.
“Obviously if we found something and a proper driver and a team that Ford would be excited about we would try and do it earlier. The worst case would be 2008 for a minimum of two Cup cars. We are also looking at some Busch cars for next year.”
Robby Gordon Motorsports’ new 125,000 square feet facility should be up and running in May or June of 2007.
The team will utilize the Roush/Yates Engine Company and Gordon will begin testing after the end of the season when he concludes his partnership with Chevrolet. New Fords are already being constructed at RGM that includes a speedway car and two "Car of Tomorrow's."
“Although I will not be in a Ford this season that doesn’t mean we’ll have another Ford driver compete this year,” Gordon said.
