In case you needed another reason to dance in glee over ESPN's imminent departure.

Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Race to Air on Alternate Channels in Seven Markets

NASCAR fans in seven affected markets will watch ABC’s telecast of Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on alternate channels through arrangements made by their local ABC affiliates.

The ABC affiliates in the seven markets will be airing NFL preseason games Saturday night rather than the NASCAR race but with the alternate channels in each market, the race telecast will still be available nationwide. ABC’s coverage begins with NASCAR Countdown at 7 p.m. ET with the race’s green flag at 7:44 p.m.

In six of the seven markets, the race telecast will air on ESPN and several of the ABC affiliates also will air the race on their Digital Tier channels. In Columbus, Ohio, the race will air on local station WWHO-TV.
Also, ABC affiliates in Buffalo, Charlotte, N.C., and Rochester, N.Y., will join either NASCAR Countdown or the race telecast in progress following the conclusion of a 4:30 p.m. ET game between the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins. The Rochester station will air NASCAR Countdown and the race on its Digital Tier channel until the game ends.

NASCAR Countdown will be pre-empted by local news in Little Rock, Ark., and Tyler, Tex., but both ABC affiliates will air the race telecast.

The affected markets:

Buffalo – ABC affiliate WKBW-TV will join either NASCAR Countdown or the race in progress following 4:30 p.m. Buffalo-Washington game.

Charlotte, NC – ABC affiliate WSOC-TV will join either NASCAR Countdown or the race in progress following 4:30 p.m. Buffalo-Washington game.

Columbus, Ohio – NASCAR Countdown and race will air on local station WWHO-TV.

Dayton, Ohio – NASCAR Countdown and race will air on ESPN and on Digital Tier 2 channel of ABC affiliate WKEF-TV.

Nashville, TN – NASCAR Countdown and race will air on ESPN.

Philadelphia – NASCAR Countdown and race will air on ESPN and on Digital Tier 2 channel of ABC affiliate WPVI-TV.

Phoenix – NASCAR Countdown and race will air on ESPN and Digital Tier 2 channel of ABC affiliate KNXV-TV.

Rochester, NY — ABC affiliate WHAM-TV will air NASCAR Countdown on its Digital Tier 2 channel and will join in progress on its main channel following 4:30 p.m. Buffalo-Washington game.

St. Joseph, MO – NASCAR Countdown and race will air on ESPN.

Weslaco, TX – NASCAR Countdown and race will air on ESPN and Digital Tier 2 channel of ABC affiliate KRGV.

Are you having trouble locating ESPN on your cable providers channel lineup? If so I'd bet they provide a channel listing on their web site. Most cable companies even have a scrolling guide.

Really, is this a big deal these days?

The easiest solution would be for ESPN to just air this race on ESPN and save ABC broadcast coverage for the Chase races. But that makes too much sense.

The epicenter of stock car racing is going to preempt NASCAR Cup race coverage for football. Well, that puts it in perspective.
I'm trying to figure this one out. Who in Charlotte cares about the Redskins or especially the Bills? I might be able to understand if it were a Panthers game but this seems odd.

that is the big mystery. It's almost as if they are trying to slap the brain in the face.

Guess that'll be one of the good things about still having Speed here in Canada. At first I read all the NASCAR programs (practice etc..) would be gone. That's not true, and Speed wont play Football :) Either way, the internet is good to watch practice and q for the most part and Ive gotten tired of watching most of Race Day. As long as the race is live, no problem.

Race day has become a waste of time. Same with race hub. nascar now is still good though.

It was refreshing to watch a little of the FS1 sporting news and see some time dedicated to nascar. That sheet never happens unless there is a crazy accident or some princess of the road gets injured.:D

And it is preseason...who cares...I could see if it was the middle of November and it was a crucial game, but Preseason??

Thank god for Espn leaving! Luckily this doesnt effect me...

Not sure why this is a problem the ABC affiliate in my area doesn't require cable or satellite service.
More people should have access = no problem.

I don't get it either. Are we supposed to be bitching that ESPN is covering the race in areas that are preempted by football on ABC. If I were in one of those areas I'd be happy that ESPN is there to cover it. Personally I think it's a good thing that fans in those places can still see the race on ESPN. Maybe that's just me though?

if someone doesnt have cable, thry wont be able to watch in those markets. I think its stupid. I know why but preseason football is the worst.

We're Andy, of course we're supposed to be bitching about it. ;)

I get why Buffalo and Rochester markets are doing this because it involves their local team, but what's odd is the other markets on the list don't have any connection to Buffalo or Washington. And the DC market isn't even moving the race to ABC.

The Redskins game is being televised nationally on NFL Network and on CSN Washington (it's available here in Roanoke not sure about Charlotte though).

Having an out of market exhibition football game that's already being televised nationally simulcast on a local network in the heart of NASCAR country (Charlotte) and pre-empting NASCAR for that unimportant, out of market game is nothing more than a gigantic middle finger to NASCAR fans.

LOL I'm going to be attending a wedding so I'm going to miss this race anyway. Wedding crashing seems more ideal to me.

Maybe now the pre-race show will follow in football's shoes.
NFL: "Return to this station for kickoff coverage at 1:00pm". Kickoff: 1:05pm
NASCAR: "Meet us here next sunday for the drop of the green flag at 1:00pm". Green flag: 2:15pm
:owquitit:

So true.

Only sport that ever starts on time is Basketball.

I am not that surprised, it is one of the most populated areas in the U.S., the corridor from D.C. to NYC. Until lately, last ten years or so, races around here were screwed around Dallas Cowboy or OU football.

Yeah, that one is inexplicable.

If someone doesn't have cable, they've missed everything since the July Daytona race already and have only the Charlotte race to look forward to. What's one more poop in their already overflowing punch bowl? If they're fans of any other form of motorsports, they're even further up the creek; are there any non-NASCAR races on broadcast TV besides the Indy 500?

Why? Seriously? Because those stations think they can make more money airing a pre-season game than a race. They're businesses, remember?

I didn't realize this game was also on NFL Network. I'm surprised that the ABC would even allow NFLN to carry the same game opposite their telecast.

Even pre season games(which mean nothing) get higher ratings than Nascar. I love both sports but Nascar will never be even half the draw that the NFL is.
Here in Raven land it is out of control. They get thousands just to watch practice.

Oops just created a thread about this, disregard.

Can't believe the Charlotte fanbase is getting treated like that.. Bristol or Preseason football.. Is that even a comparison?

The local ABC affiliate here in Nashville, WKRN-2, carries all the Titans pre-season games, and they're playing Atlanta Saturday night. Guess I'll be flipping back and forth between ABC and ESPN.

I know why that's why there was no question mark. Obviously, those markets must have data that backs that up.. Football is my favorite sport, I love my Cowboys but I watch five mins of preseason game it's crazy how big the NFL has gotten.

The Cowboys-Dolphins Hall of Fame Game a couple of weeks ago earned 10.1 million viewers. That's more than any NASCAR race this year outside of the Daytona 500.

There was a day not all that long ago that when a show would get bumped because of preseason football that you simply would not have gotten a chance to see it anywhere else. Now we have alternatives. That's a good thing. If ESPN 1, 2, or 3 weren't around those NASCAR fans in those markets wouldn't have a choice. If you can't understand the interest in football over NASCAR then your out of touch with today's reality. Even preseason football.

Good point, dp. Growing up in Va., I remember that we never got to see the spring Atlanta race. It was always on ABC, but our local ABC affiliate WSET-13 had the rights to ACC Basketball, and the ACC tournament bumped the Atlanta race every year. I also remember ESPN used to not televise the spring Martinsville race until Monday, because of the NFL Draft. I'm glad we have a lot more alternate outlets when such a conflict arises today.

Yeah Nascar racing, although not a top money maker is at least getting honorable mention. It might have been footballed around the channels, but I could still watch the race..all I cared about.

Not complaining at all, I'll still be able to watch the race if I want to. And I do undertand that NFL is a huge ratings god, and makes money hand over fist, even during pre-season. But frankly, I just don't get all the pre-season hype. Never have, never will.
