Jackbolts, trackbars, trailing arms

A while back there was some discussion about exactly what a jacking bolt was, besides something that many teams get penaties for improper ones.

While looking for something else I found a simple rendering of the rear suspension system that WC cars use.

The items # 1 & 2 are the springs, with the jacking bolts and pads located on top. Turning the bolts compresses or decompresses the springs.

The yellow bar is the track bar, it is adjusted up and down on one end by turning the bolt item #5.

The blue bars are the trailing arms. The offset bolts which JJ and team were penalized for would be located at the unattached end in this picture. This end would be attached to the car's chassis in use.

The rear axle assy is red.

Yeah ol JJ team used a offset bolt to help keep th rearend down, didn't they?

JJ's team fabricated attaching bolts for the trailing arms which had the heads offset from the body of the bolt by 5/16 of an inch. This effectively made the trailing arm longer. The extra length would provide more leverage on the spring allowing the spoiler downforce to compress the spring further than the mandated length trailing arm would. Or from another viewpoint would make the spring rate effectively lower.

NASCAR mandates the rear spring rate at the restrictor plate tracks so this was an attempt to get around the rate required. This would allow the rear of the car to squat more and get more of the rear spoiler out of the air stream in an effort to increase top speed.

Thanx for th info, there HardScrabble!
Beer's to ya! :beerchug:

One would think that jackbolt infractions would be caught in pre-race inspection. It doesn't look like ilegal oned would be hard to miss.
