LYNN HAVEN, FL- Phoenix Racing made a big hire on Wednesday night as team owner James Finch reached an agreement with 2004 NASCAR champion Kurt Busch. Busch agreed to drive the #51 car for Phoenix Racing in the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide series.

Busch has had his share of embarrassments in the last few months, getting into a heated argument with a reporter, amongst other things. That led to his departure from Penske racing, and the opening for him to sign with Phoenix.

After a few weeks of talks, and a meeting in Charlotte Wednesday, Finch and Busch agreed to a deal. Now Phoenix Racing has a cup champion, and a chase driver behind the wheel. Finch says has already talked with Busch about his past.

"He lost a job and he's lost several million dollars, and so I think that's been a wake up call. I told him, I said Kurt it's about winning racing. you need to watch your temper and your mouth," Finch said. "I hired him for his foot and not his mouth. hopefully we can get him controlled. He's got a long way to come. He's got to show people he's going to be a driver. And show NASCAR that he's a driver, and he's going to do what's expected as a driver."

Busch and the team will head to test for the preseason thunder session at Daytona International Speedway as they prepare for the Budweiser Shootout.

At least Finch knows where's he's going with this nut case of talent

I send my sentiments and condolences to the 51 Crew. Kurts had 10 full years in Cup and hasn't learned a damn thing. Good Luck to Mr Finch.

I think if I was a crew member and we were finally winning races and maybe even made the chase, he could cuss all he wanted on that radio and I'd still be happy.

Winning does seem to make things go a little smoother.:)

Yeah but I don't seem to remember anyone cussing and whineing while they where Winning? Do you?

I hope not to sound like a keyboard warrior, but:

I will take a few private cussings and let someone occasionally vent one on one (marriage experience helps some). There needs to be something very upsetting to trigger the case, it can't be a Sunday routine.

But, I will take far less in a public setting for other listeners to hear, intentionally broadcasted or not, don't cross that line. After a just a few I will try to stop it at all cost, in a profound manner to reset the rank. I am just an average guy and may suffer a butt kicking, but I will not willing accept the garbage.

Call it vanity, male ego or whatever, but I doubt few self respecting people feel differently. Maybe primal but you just can't let those incidents become a trend or stand.

I might could put up with some inter-team smack talk, within limits. That needs some smiles and humor, and it is slippery slope. Even in those cases you still have some limits.

A little off topic, but I think a woman should be just as determined not take the garbage, either.

I hope Finch is still strong enough to keep a firm hand, even a fist if needed. Kurt's a good driver gone wrong who needs the reset, but he has not forgot how to drive.

He needs a strong hand to keep him in line, Finch could be his blessing in disguise. As for Finch he has everything to gain, and little to lose. He recently considered selling out, and only the bizarre scenario set up a chance to get a talent like Kurt.

[notes to self: Yeah Kurt's driving a Chevy, good job Greg at phase I, rebuilding one our drivers image].

I agree with everything that you said there.I would add two things.First ,there must have been a conflict there at Penske that "took the fun out of it' and caused relations to deteriorate so badly .To be quite honest, the day Kurt let loose at Roger on the team radio ,I thought Roger would tell him to bring the car in and park it.They had a bad relationship. There is no reason to believe that Kurt would take that chip on his shoulder to another team .
Second,I hate the cursing and fighting and wrecking other competitors. That said ,before 'boys have at it' I was ready to quit watching Nascar .Single swear words and single punches were being fined on a regular basis .New drivers had to be so squeeky clean that they were all Jeff Gordon clones. My point is I am against going back down that road even if it means putting up with the Busch brothers.

Have you forgotten how giddy Kurt was about the improved Penske cars going into the chase? He even thought JJ was jealous. Then the chase begins, and Penske equiptment can't keep up yet again. He was crushed and fed up, and had no faith in Penske anymore. He went on to say that it's well know in the garage that Penske does things a particular way, and even his CC's had trouble meshing with their engineering department.

IMO, Kurt wanted out, and he wanted to get in HMS equiptment at any cost.

I'm sure there were ups and downs. Both sides trying to put a good face on it.But something was broken there. IMO ,Kurt had no idea he was getting fired nor where he might end up.

Because he wasn't fired, and know he's in HMS cars going for one thing only..wins.

I'm sure that everyone at Phoenix Racing is hoping for wins , but a Hendrick car doesn't guarantee that . Ask Ryan Newman .

Now if they could just convince all the other drivers to do the same thing, Nascar might be worth watching. I mean every race from start to finish, like I use to do.

But seriously, is only going after wins in a race a bad thing to do?

These guys say that there are drivers out there not racing for wins but they won't (or can't) name them.

We all know who they are - Right, Carl???

YEAH RIGHT..:sarcasm: What was he thinkin ? One more win and he would have been champion . That was dumb. I doubt there is anyone else out there that stupid.

One more race wouldn't have given Carl the cup unless that one win came at Homestead. There was no way Carl was getting past Tony, heck, Tony would have wrecked his mom to win this year. :D

Fact: Kurt FREAKS OUT when his car doesn't handle as good as everyone else's. He blames "the team" instead of trying to help the team fix the problem. Or try a different line (I'm sure he does that too, but he does more blaming than trying). So if Penske cars were not up to his standards, nothing will be and he will freak out again and again.

The comments about sissy-boy Carl should be in another thread. :D

It's like, when someone asks you to fix their computer, but you don't know what's wrong. The team has 14 seconds to fix the car based off of "You guys suck" and "this m*****f***ing car is a piece of s***". It's like trying to diagnose a computer for 30 minutes (without seeing it or anything) off of "it doesn't work".

Kurt can't stand to be second at an organization. He couldn't stand that Brad Keselowski, with the same car and team he had last year, won three races and finished 5th in points and did so in, realistically, half a season.

I sure hope Kyle pays attention and smartens up. He'll be heading down the same career path as his older brother if he keeps it up. Kyle's young and has room to mature. Kurt can't be fixed, it's forever.

I agree 100%

He's been in everything else but a Toyota. And they can't get it done, just like Dodge.

Kurt did it in a FORD, but he knows that HMS gets it done like they are flipping flap jacks at a greasy spoon.

IE, HMS wins more than everybody else combined in the recent era.

Once Kurt lost faith in PENSKE, he saw what he knew, and he knows what he knows, and when Kurt knows what he know, he's going to do something about it.

When Kurt has the fastest car, he wins, so he wants the fastest car. And Finch can give it to him, in his own opinion.

We shall C if the KuBu can muster up some get R done eR no?

Exactly, Kurt felt he had squOzen all he could have out of the equipment at Penske. Kurt had a grudge against the lead engineer, and then it seemed fine once that guy left. But like FenderBumper said, their cars weren't for **** in the chase and Kurt was not expecting that. He wants to win, not argue with an engineering team.

Yep, he was so pissed that Brad showed him up all year it drove him crazy. He can only blame himself.

Well, he still gets sponsors even with his behavior so I guess hiring Busch was a good call for Phoenix.

TAG Heuer Eyewear will sponsor Kurt Busch: TAG Heuer Eyewear announced that it has entered into a multi-race sponsorship agreement with Sprint Cup Series champion Kurt Busch and Phoenix Racing. Busch, who will drive the # 51 Chevy for Phoenix Racing in the entire 2012 Sprint Cup season, has a personal services agreement with the eyewear company. TAG Heuer Eyewear will be featured as the primary sponsor on the # 51 Chevy for the Feb. 18 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway, where Busch is the defending winner. Additionally, TAG Heuer Eyewear will serve as an associate sponsor on the # 51 Chevy during the 54th running of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 26 and again on March 11 for the Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Busch's hometown track.(TrueSpeed Communications)(1-11-2012)

I thought they used EGR engines...
