James Hylton, 76, plans to become oldest driver to make Nationwide Series race at Darlington
James Hylton will attempt to break his own record as the oldest driver to compete in a NASCAR Nationwide Series race as the 76-year-old will attempt to qualify for the Royal Purple 200 Friday at Darlington Raceway.
Hylton will drive the No. 0 for the JD Motorsports team owned by Johnny Davis with sponsorship from G&K Services. As of Thursday morning, there were only 41 entries for the event, so Hylton should make the 43-car field. If more than 43 cars show up, then he would have to make the race on speed.
Still racing in the ARCA Series, Hylton has not competed in a Nationwide event since the July race at Daytona in 2008.
"I want to thank G&K Services for coming aboard to give me the opportunity to do something that will never get old to me,” Hylton said in a news release. “I am excited to be a part of the Nationwide Series. Johnny and I have a long history together."
Davis was Hylton’s crew chief from 1981-83 in the NASCAR Cup series. Hylton made 601 career Cup starts from 1964-1993 with two wins. He finished second in points three times and in the top five eight times.
He last attempted to qualify for a Cup race in 2007, when he failed to make the Daytona 500.
Hylton finished 15th in the ARCA standings in 2009 and 19th in 2010. He is 17th after three races this year.
