NASCAR veteran James Hylton will attempt to make 2009 Daytona 500
EM Motorsports officials have announced that NASCAR veteran Jame Hylton will attempt to make the field for the season-opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Daytona 500 Feb. 15, 2009.
Hylton, 74, attempted to make the lineup for race in 2007, but his effort was thwarted due to a faulty clutch during the qualifying event.
The Inman, S.C., native made one start in 2008 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and competed full time in the ARCA Re/Max Series. Hylton made history at Daytona earlier this year as the oldest driver ever to enter a NASCAR race. On July 4, Hylton qualified 38th, ran 82 of 105 laps and finished 36th in the Winn-Dixie 250 Nationwide race.
Hylton started his racing career as a mechanic for NASCAR legend Rex White and made his debut in 1964 in what was known then as the Grand National series.
During his career, which spanned 27 seasons, Hylton made 601 starts, won twice and posted 140 top-five and 301 top-10 finishes. His first victory came in the 1970 Richmond 500 at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway. Hylton started third, passed Bobby Isaac on lap 340 and led the final 160 laps.
His second win was in the 1972 Talladega 500. Despite starting 22nd, Hylton led a total of 106 laps, the most of any driver in the 188 lap event, and was able to hold off Ramo Stott for the victory.
Team owner John Carter is excited to have Hylton behind the wheel of his EM Motorsports Dodge.
“Our goal is to run a complete 2009 series with Hylton driving," Carter said. “You don’t know how proud we are of being part of history by putting Hylton in our car. We hope that sponsors will come on board so we can run the complete Cup [season)”.
