NASCAR veteran James Hylton will attempt to make 2009 Daytona 500

EM Motorsports officials have announced that NASCAR veteran Jame Hylton will attempt to make the field for the season-opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Daytona 500 Feb. 15, 2009.

Hylton, 74, attempted to make the lineup for race in 2007, but his effort was thwarted due to a faulty clutch during the qualifying event.

The Inman, S.C., native made one start in 2008 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and competed full time in the ARCA Re/Max Series. Hylton made history at Daytona earlier this year as the oldest driver ever to enter a NASCAR race. On July 4, Hylton qualified 38th, ran 82 of 105 laps and finished 36th in the Winn-Dixie 250 Nationwide race.

Hylton started his racing career as a mechanic for NASCAR legend Rex White and made his debut in 1964 in what was known then as the Grand National series.

During his career, which spanned 27 seasons, Hylton made 601 starts, won twice and posted 140 top-five and 301 top-10 finishes. His first victory came in the 1970 Richmond 500 at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway. Hylton started third, passed Bobby Isaac on lap 340 and led the final 160 laps.

His second win was in the 1972 Talladega 500. Despite starting 22nd, Hylton led a total of 106 laps, the most of any driver in the 188 lap event, and was able to hold off Ramo Stott for the victory.

Team owner John Carter is excited to have Hylton behind the wheel of his EM Motorsports Dodge.

“Our goal is to run a complete 2009 series with Hylton driving," Carter said. “You don’t know how proud we are of being part of history by putting Hylton in our car. We hope that sponsors will come on board so we can run the complete Cup [season)”.

Oh boy, I guess if you have the money to blow, but we all know there is no chance in heck he will make it or anyother race next year. Here comes the field fillers:rolleyes:

That's what I was thinking when I saw that. Wonder where Kirk Shelmerdine is now days. He was a field filler at one time.

Well i guess he has a chance of making it since there wont be 43 regular teams. Wonder what other under financed teams and forgoten about drivers will come back just to start a race next season.

GO JAMES!!! :beerbang::beerbang::beerbang:

James Hylton's been racing in ARCA.

Kirk Shelmerdine raced in the 2008 Daytona ARCA 200; finished 34th.

This has to be an early April Fool's joke..

Not good for the other drivers. I can just imagine how his eye-hand coordination has slowed down at this age.

I think Red Farmer is about 76 years old and he recently won a race down on an Alabama short track. I can appreciate anyone that doesn't let age get in the way of them doing what they love to do.

True, the reflexes may slow down. But everyone is different and these guys are so tuned into racing they could still whup-up on some of the younger guys out there.

James Hylton is a good guy. He came by to say hello when I had the Viagra car at a Wal-Mart back in 2005. We talked for about a half hour and I think he was pleased to see that I recognized him and knew a little bit about him as a racer. A true southern gentleman I hope he gets to make the field and race this year. If his reflexes are slow, I am sure it will be obvious. Otherwise, I would like to see him race even if he comes in last.

What a wonderful way to be able to enjoy your later years doing what you love. I can sympathize with him.

Like I said before, I think James Hylton was my favorite interview. He's been around the sport for such a long time.

He's a local cat also - made his first career Cup start at Old Dominion.

After watching some of the younger guys be immature, on the track, I would rather race with Red Farmer any day.

It's all fine until something goes wrong. It's great that he wants to run short tracks.....but this is Daytona, with restrictor plates, and bump drafting.
You think he's done a lot of bump drafting ? I don't know.....If he get's involved in the " Big One ", and somebody gets hurt......or he takes out someone like Dale Jr......there's gonna be a bunch of people, asking a whole bunch of questions, and NASCAR could look bad.

Do you really think James will be bump drafting??
James Hilton has enough sense to stay out of the way and out of trouble. Hilton isn't out there to push his way to victory lane but if he happened to fall into that particular bucket of gold, more power to him.

Rather than anybody trying to pee on the old gents shoes, they should be giving him some credit.
Hell! He hasn't even made the field yet. But whether he does or not is a great tribute to Hilton, his fans and all us old farts over seventy. :)

Older drivers are still winning all over the country at local tracks. The top series in any racing is always going to be geared towards getting a sponsor because of the money involved, and that means, sorry to say it, the young have a big advantage. If Morgan Shepherd could find a good car to race, he would still be amoung the front runners, but what big money sponsor would be willing to have Morgan as a spokesperson?

...I believe right now its GOD..........but he doesnt bring lots of cash........just all things good and everlasting life ;)

No matter who causes the big one they look bad. Like look at Kevin Lepage hes been around for a while but he caused that accident at Talledaga and suddenly he got a bunch of negitive attention.

Yea but you know what I mean. It's the nature of press.

For starters, it becomes a news story, not a sports story. So you have a bunch of yahoos that don't know jack about the sport....covering the sport. And they will be there drooling for a story.

Then they change his name. It won't be Jame Hylton any more.It will be " The 74 year old James Hylton ".

" The 74 year old James Hylton was involved in this big wreck today....( then they show a wreck like we always see at Daytona, but since they don't know anything about the sport, they will sensationalize it ). " The question remains,,,,,Is it right for a 74 year old to race at this level ?" Blah blah blah blah.

You see what I mean ? Personally, I don't care either way. It's just something to yak about during the off-season.:)

I just wonder if they'l make him have his left turn signal on all during the race.

he might not make the field for The 51st Daytona 500 but he's gonna teach some of those cats a thing or two.

And if he does make the field...

AWESOME! :beerbang:

Dave Marcis made the field for the 44th Daytona 500.

I think he will make it. Remember last time her tried out there was 61 cars trying out for the Daytona 500 and he ran well. This year i would be shocked if 51 cars tried to make it.
