Toyota and...Jarrett? The new NASCAR Nextel Cup Toyota operation that is being backed by Red Bull "has opened the checkbook," according to one top Ford man, who points to Red Bull's hiring of John Propst, a top Ford Motor Company vehicle dynamics specialist, and the hiring of a top Dodge engineer from the Ray Evernham camp for its new stock-car racing team. General Motors executives are anxiously watching their own key engineers for any similar defections. Elsewhere on the Toyota-NASCAR front, Toyota has made a bid to sign a two-year contract with Dale Jarrett, the tour's 1999 champion and a three-time Daytona 500 winner. Jarrett's contract with car owner Robert Yates is up at the end of this season. While it has been unclear for several months if Yates and Jarrett could come to new terms, Ford officials said Yates is offering Jarrett a contract similar to the Toyota deal.(Winston Salem Journal)(4-8-2006)

I'm a long time DJ lover. Everyone's got a 'second favorite' or drivers they're partial to, and DJ's mine. For him not to be behind the wheel of the 88 when he retires will be terrible. I know the 88 isn't like Earnhardt's 3 or anything, and DJ has piloted the 18, but I just wish Yates and he can work something out so he can retire from the 88.

Gotta remember that its business. I too would hate to see it happen but with the amount of money, technology, that Red Bull and Toyota will be dumping into the cup series I just gotta think DJ is a taking a long hard look at this as he should. Toyota really means business and will not settle for 2nd best. I am sure DW and Mikey are probably courting DJ to jump to the dark side as well.

I don't know why all you think Toyota is the dark side, big deal if he goes there, he isn't exactly ripping it up at Yates. Maybe a change will do him good and give him a chance at a victory again.

That is the perception for those NASCAR loyalists. Me? I welcome the addition and the more I think about it I would like to see DJ make the jump.

He has to do what is best for him, not what he thinks the fans want, of course he will do what is financially best for his career. I believe he plans on only driving at most 2 more years, so might as well secure your retirement.

Exactly. That's what he did when he jumped from Chev to Ford and that is exactly what every other driver does. Not a thing wrong with it.

For me, it's not about Toyota at all - it's about the association with the 88 number. I hope when it does happen, they think really hard about 'promoting' Sadler to the 88 so a bit of the Yates team legacy we've grown accustomed to over the last few years carries on. Elliot would carry on the 88 as good or better than DJ.

I was no Rusty fan, but it's like Busch in the 2 - it's just wrong.

Agreed and yet for the longest time Jeff Gordon rec'd a lot of criticism when he did the same. Some posters on this very board never could get over it as late as last year.
Some hate the player and not the game...

I know that there are those who are so brand loyal that they pick a driver in that brand.

Imagine what Bill Elliott's father would have thought to see Bill racing the Daytona 500 in a Chevy!

Very few drivers stick with one manufacturer for their entire carreer, and those that do, do so mainly because they have a contract that keeps them where they are. Hell, even Earnhardt drove a Ford at one time.:headbang:

I had read that Jarrett was going to quietly retire after this season. Probably B.S. but has anyone else heard that?

Story I read was that he intended to run through his contract (2008) and then retire. If I was only planning on racing two more years and Toyota came to me with a handful of money, I'd go!!!
