Darrell Waltrip In Ballet Slippers?
The three-time NASCAR champ and Fox Sports TV commentator (Darrell Waltrip) from Franklin will perform with the Nashville Ballet in next month's production of the "Nutcracker." Waltrip will play the role of Mother Ginger in a Dec. 15 performance at Tennessee Performing Arts Center's Jackson Hall. "Having been in NASCAR for all these years, I do know how to act," Waltrip said. What's a rugged stock car racer doing in ballet slippers? "They invited me and I accepted," Waltrip said. "It's for a good cause. It helps generate publicity for the ballet and I'm glad to help out. It'll be fun."
Nashville Ballet spokeswoman Laurie Davis predicts Waltrip's role will be "scene-stealing" as he "dances for joy and moves with the speed of light" in his "voluminous skirts." Waltrip, 59, said he's not sure about "moving with the speed of light," but said he'll hike his skirt and give it his best shot.
One of Waltrip's daughters, Sarah, is studying acting and has a role in her school play, "Oklahoma." What was her reaction when she learned that her dad will be playing Mother Ginger in the "Nutcracker"? -- "She said she doesn't know if she can stand to watch," Waltrip said with a laugh.
Davis noted that other Nashville-area sports figures have performed in the "Nutcracker" in the past, and said they, like Waltrip, are good sports. Davis said celebrities such as Waltrip draw attention to the ballet and help attract an audience that might not otherwise be interested. Last year Titans tight end Ben Troupe played Mother Ginger, and Channel 4 sportscaster Rudy Kalis will assume the role in a later holiday production.
Waltrip's appearance will generate national attention for the Nashville Ballet. Fox Sports plans to send a film crew to film his performance for airing during Daytona Speed Weeks in February. The Nashville Ballet will donate tickets in Waltrip's name to an outreach program for youngsters in Middle Tennessee. For ticket information, call Ticketmaster or visit (nashville ballet.com), the TPAC box office or Davis-Kidd Booksellers in the Mall at Green Hills.(Tennessean)
I wonder if he has good legs?
