Jayski.com: Roush sees retirement ahead

Glad he's finally coming to the realization that we all already knew.

It's really sad to have witnessed that organizations demise in a relatively short period of time, in NASCAR years.

Flashback to September 10, 2005. Roush places five cars in the ten car Chase field.

Roush Racing having five of the ten cars in the 2005 Chase, has resulted in a NASCAR rule change limiting teams to four cars in 2006.

My how times have changed. :(

My how times are a changing.

That was before my time as a fan (I started following closely in 2010) but to have half the Chase Field in your stable is quite impressive. So the following season is when the four team limit was instituted?

The question will be if they can actually sell the team or if it gets "merged" into another team. Those mergers usually end up with the team assets getting dissolved.

I hope it doesn't happen for a while (for Jack's sake) but maybe we'll finally see what the NASCAR charters are really worth.

Not sure how I feel about this news. On one hand, it sucks to see a long-time (mostly) successful owner close to riding into the sunset. On the other hand, good riddance. I have heard nothing but bad things about Roush from the people I know who have met him.

Heard that Yates will take over

I believe 2010 was the first year for the four-team rule, as Roush still had 5 full-time drivers in 2009 (Kenseth, Edwards, Biffle, McMurray, and Ragan). Roush axed McMurray's team for 2010 to comply with the rule.

Where'd you hear it? Doug, Robert, or both? It would be a logical extension of the existing Roush-Yates engine operation, but I dunno if either are interested in getting back into the team ownership business.
Was a rumor several years ago. May or may not be true.

Geez, I thought you meant sometime this year or during the off-season.

I heard Washington was going to pull the troops south out of Valley Forge; I hope the Brits don't hear about it and cross the river behind him.
Lol

That was the whole talking point by the owners that whether their teams are worth anything should they decide to get out. This will be the first big test of that.

If this sport is to continue, and I hope it will, it will have to manage the transition or asset sales of Roush, Hendrick, Gibbs, Penske, etc or the doors will close at the shops and we will be left with empty tracks that are sold as housing developments or wither away and succumb to nature. Let's hope they have that figured out and won't be throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks as is the current trend in NASCAR.

Roush-Fenway Racing is just a shell of its former self, might as well go ahead and pack it in. Bayne is off to a decent start this year, but every year it seems we have this same conversation about the Roush teams being off to a good start, and they eventually settle into running where they have been the past few years.

I think SHR and RFR will have some sort of amalgamation or association due to sponsorship reasons.

I say it is long overdue and good riddance, cya have fun in retirement.

2 scenarios I'll create as pure rumor.

1. Carl Edwards buys out Jack Roush and becomes a new Ford team for 2018. Part of the deal is that he has to be one of the drivers, so he keeps the 6 and 17, and brings back the 99 using the 16 charter that is on loan to JTGD.
2. Penske buys 2 of Jack's charters, one for the 27 and one for blaney. The 21 gets to pick a new driver. JTGD buys the third Roush charter.

My reading comprehension a skills are not the best but I didn't read anything in that article that he is selling/closing anything. The race team is a very small part of his kingdom. Sounded to me like he is getting people in place to continue on when he does step aside.

And dog him all you want, that man has accomplished more than about any other owner, aside from Penske, in the garage. His real business is making cars we can all own go fast. Didn't inherit companies or dealerships. And when Roush was competitive, he was actually part of the team, not just owning it. He's forgot more than most of us will ever know.

^ I agree. Good post. It's surprising how many people are eager to thumb their nose at Jack. I guess that is a prediction for the treatment Rick Hendrick or Joe Gibbs will get if they ever suffer a dry spell in their win stats.

Agreed but it is time for him to get out.

I doubt they will because they have been pretty beloved and really were not part of their teams. Roush built his engines, tuned them on race day, worked on the car, and helped decide on strategy during races. He also spoke for his teams and Ford during the whining days when NASCAR played with specific rules for manufacturers. Because he was so involved and vocal, the people who's teams he thumped on and competed with don't like him. Gibbs is just an owner and stays out of the fray while Hendrick is a felon but his people love him.

Roush was allowed to keep 5 for a year... or 2? But the rest of the teams were limited to 4.

I've heard plenty on racing forums, some involved with NASCAR, some not, that seem to think Doug Yates will run the team soon.

That was Earnhardt supposedly. Obviously there was room when the felon made it. Keselowski went to Penske because Hendrick saw Martin still had value in the 5. He made the "I'll know where to find him" when he had an open ride comment then.

I forgot about Mark Martin. He had an optional year and he took it.. so there was no room at the inn for Kes. 4 car rule.

One might say the end of 2005 was the begining of the end.

Fielding 50% of the entire chase field and coming off empty was a blow to be sure.

BTW, whatever happened to John Henry? He bought himself a piece of that team and just let it die on the vine?

He made no efforts to improve that team. Then again, his other team hasn't been doing hot lately either.

Thats alot of sarcasm for someone who doesnt keep up with new trends ;)

I think it's time for Jack to retire....... it was mentioned that he thought whoever was in charge could continue on..... I think that's a mistake.... The whole team should be sold and disbanded. John Henry knows nothing and cares nothing about racing. It was a financial opportunity that didn't pan out. Jack was the backbone of the company. I have been a big Roush supporter since his drag racing days with Gapp and Roush.... Then his road racing.... I joined the bandwagon in a big way when he came into Nascar in '88..... He is a very intelligent person and had to fight an uphill battle in Nascar I believe because he wasn't ''ONE OF US''...... But..... he hung in like a hair in a biscuit and weathered a lot of adversities...... It has been painful the last few years to see how he has struggled to field competitive teams..... after Mark left..... then Kenseth and Edwards.... now Biffle.... (and I don't blame Biffle.. he was the last man to turn out the lights..... he also hung on till the end)........ I just thank Penske and now SHR for taking over ...... the Wood Brothers.... what can I say..... I hope they can somehow come back to the point where they are a threat every week like they once were......
