Jeff Gluck Podcast Episode: How much does a general sports fan know about NASCAR?

Could you break it down? I don't want to sit through an 18 minute podcast.

Gluck interviewed a buddy of his who is not a Nascar fan. The crux of his comments were that he doesn't feel like attending races because they are a pain in the ass to drive to and from and he knows the names of some older drivers but has never heard of Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace or Chase Elliott. The television coverage stinks because it doesn't replicate the experience of the track and there is not enough action in the series to warrant watching an entire race. He may watch a couple of opening laps and then check back in a half hour or so and then watch the last lap or so.

The podcast showed a real problem with how the general public perceives our sport. But, then, I don't know
that's anything really new.

Gluck's friend wasn't hostile toward Nascar nor did he have any crazy beliefs like the races are fixed. If I had to pick one word to describe his feelings I would say he was apathetic and apathy is about as bad as it gets. You are better off having someone talking trash because at least they are talking about you.

Gluck's friend said he was glad he had the experience of going to a race (Charlotte when Gluck took him) but made it sound like once was enough. One of the reasons he said he wouldn't go to a race was due to distance and Gluck told him he was only 90 minutes from Fontana and his buddy said that was too far. He didn't want to deal with traffic to and from and didn't want to drive home after drinking alcohol.

Glucks' friend did not use to word boring but I took what he said to mean that the races lacked action and there was no need to watch an entire event. The vibe was that the cars take off, drive around, have some accidents and there is the end of the race. I have no idea if this guy was just speaking for himself or many others but I hope for Nascar's sake he was only speaking for himself.

If people are tuning into Nascar in order to see buzzer beaters, 70 yard bombs, end to end goals or grand slam home runs they will be very disappointed. Regardless of how much Brian and the networks are trying to turn Nascar into stick and ball it just doesn't work. Instead of trying to emulate stick and ball Nascar should be trying to celebrate how different it is. Who remembers what 7-Up did in the early 70's to differentiate itself from coke?

Auto racing doesn't appeal to some people.

Enjoying it is optional.

Ya think!

One of the things I liked about this podcast was that it was matter of fact and if you want to see an example of a person not personalizing things Jeff Gluck is the guy. His buddy even apologized to him a couple of times but Gluck didn't care as he is truly a guy that doesn't personalize things and then in the next sentence does so. Very refreshing but not for apologists.

Racing on TV and seeing it in person are two different things. If a person can persuade a non-fan to see one in person, their view might change.
I took my friend to Cup race , its was during the last few years of the COT era( I think 2011), I got us pit passes , had really good seats, he a good time, but he didnt become fan, so sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

But that works both ways, Ive gone to Football( college/NFL) Baseball games with him and that was not enough to change my mind about stick and ball sports and I continue to not be a S&B fan

I’d like to think that when general manstream sports fan says “this sucks” or “this isnt entertaining” while watching NASCAR with their buddy, said buddy would take an effort to explain something missing or mention what makes it so great.

Rather than “yeah, most folks dont like it. Thats normal”.

More people attending races makes it more affordable for everyone as a whole. If possible, take a friend who is mildy interesting in the sport a race.

Ive said it for years and Ill say it here.

I believe NASCAR needs to get together with the TV stations and action movie directors/producers to improve the at home experience. This sport at it’s core is about raw power and speed. The sports needs much better microphones to pick up the sounds of the cars. Need more depth of the engines and sound of the tires sliding as they enter the turns. I’d love a binaural headphone experience.

Put headphones in and tell me this isnt ****** awesome?

NASCAR needs better camera shots and angles that really show the speed of the cars. More exterior onboards. Less still shots and more shots that bounce with the track and cars. FFS just look at what this poor lady went through!

Capture more of an “at track” experience and more general fans who are tuning in will not be so fast to fetch the remote to change the channel out of boredom.

They were talking about quieting the cars down as some of the younger folks thought the noise was intrusive. At this point about the only loud noises I want are from Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd or The Who.....or The Doors etc etc

Half the damn people at the track don’t know what’s going on either.. I think it’s a thing to just fit in.. me and my girl can’t believe have the nonsense we here at the track..

Michael Waltrip isn't “they”.

I don't know MW exists as if for some reason he appears on my screen the FF button is deployed. I read an article where they were speaking to millennials and there were several things they listed and noise was one of them.

I can tell you that I have zero interest in college sports.
Except for Gators football and certain events involving throwing an object (not a football) a long ways.
