There's a #24 in the back though, too.

12+12=24

Works for me. That's my day of birth. :p

I remember hearing Jimmie Johnson on the radio one time saying he was originally supposed to be #23 instead of 48. I think Bill Davis Racing had already applied for the #23 for the 2002 season, so Jimmie became #48 and the rest is history.

So Jimmie was almost a half-Gordon instead of a double-Gordon. ;)

Some more information on the number.

"When I went to work (at Hendrick), the general manager at that time, Jim Johnson, said, 'OK, your number is going to be 46,'" Evernham explained on Sirius XM Radio Tuesday. "And I think even our tools were identified with No. 46."

The reason for the change, according to Evernham, was related to the film "Days of Thunder," which had been released just a few years before. One of the prominent cars in the movie utilized No. 46, and a licensing agreement prohibited a team from using the number full-time. Thus, Hendrick was forced to select a different number for Gordon to race.

Hendrick would later run the No. 46 in the 1993 Daytona 500 with defending Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr., who finished 36th in his only NASCAR start. That same season, the team also attempted to field a car for Buddy Baker in the July race at Talladega Superspeedway, but Baker failed to qualify.

"We did a car for Buddy Baker because Buddy helped us a good bit on the speedway stuff when we first started and we had to run a car and we just slapped number 46 on it," Evernham said. "To my knowledge, it's the only time that we ever had a number 46 on the DuPont paint scheme (customarily ran by Gordon)."

Nah, Jimmie was almost Michael Jordan. lol

There are more interactions too... in the movie the #46 is sponsored by City Chevrolet - a Rick Hendrick dealership.

And yes, Bill Davis had #23 in 2002 with driver Hut Stricklin.

I've seen the pic of the Dupont 46 car before, knowing it was a test car that Buddy Baker tried to qualify one race, but had no idea it was almost Jeff's number. Cool story.

I don't think the 46 is a boring number, but then again I loved the cars in Days of Thunder...

I loved that movie. When Nicole Kidman, yells "GO COLE" I confess I have to yell out. lol. Also a movie from my youth. That and Top Gun.

Probably sacrilegious to say this here but that has to be one of theee worst racing films made.

My biggest complaint about DoT was the fact that the whole film centered around winning the Daytona 500. Like, they didn't even talk about winning the points championship, just winning one race out of like 26 or 30. :-|

Watch Driven. They cover the whole season. :XXROFL:

That was the with a long eee and not three. Sorry for the confusion.
So you can't type and I can't read?

Oh, and no wonder I couldn't remember the Elvis movie title. There were two, 'Speedway' and 'Spinout', and I'm easily confused. Damned if I can remember which was which or what the difference was. But since there were two, and if we were looking for a list of three, either can bump 'Talladega Nights' to fourth.
