Jeff Gordon to be guest host
on Jan. 11 'Saturday Night Live'
By DAVID POOLE
The Charlotte Observer
Live from New York - it's Jeff Gordon!
Gordon, the four-time Winston Cup champion, will become the first motorsports competitor to serve as guest host of NBC's "Saturday
Night Live" on Jan. 11.
In a high-profile marketing coup for NASCAR, Gordon, 31, will join a short list of professional sports and sports entertainment figures to
host the live comedy-variety show that debuted in 1975.
"What an honor to be given the chance to host the show," Gordon said. "It should be a great experience, but I don't know what to
expect. It will probably be a lot like The Winston - controlled chaos."
George Carlin was the guest host of the show's debut on Oct. 11, 1975.
On Jan. 29, 1997, NFL quarterback Fran Tarkenton became the first sports figure to host the show, which airs at 11:30 p.m. from Studio
8H at NBC's headquarters in Rockerfeller Center in New York.
O.J. Simpson was the second sports personality to host the show, in February of 1988.
Bill Russell, John Madden, Bob Uecker, Alex Karras, Howard Cosell, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Chris Evert, George Steinbrenner,
Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, George Foreman, Deion Sanders and Derek Jeter have acted as the show's guest host.
Hulk Hogan also hosted the show once while fellow pro wrestler/actor The Rock has been the show's guest host twice.
