For those of you that have been NASCAR fans for quite a while, remember when Jeff Gordon was the most hated driver in the sport? He wins yesterday and not much of a bump on the meter.

I was actually rooting for Jeff :XXROFL:

I was like "YES, GORDON WINS....... wait a second, BOO!" :D

I remember because I have been a Gordon fan since the Baby Ruth days. I hope he wins so much again that everyone hates him. Love seeing him win.

Jeff Gordon was never my favorite driver but in recent years, I have become more of a fan. I think I mostly was not fond of the everything is great persona he displayed all the time. I like him better when he gets out of his car and goes to kick some ass. Or when asked about people calling him on Tuesday to apologize for something that happened on Sunday, he says that there is no reason to call as you aren't really sorry, you're just trying to cover your ass in the future.

he was simultaneously the most loved and the most hated.

not as much to hate these days. as the wins got fewer and fewer and jimmie started winning all the championships, the gordon fans all got quiet!;)

most of the gordon haters were earnhardt fans who saw the kid as a challenge to dale sr. i think dale and gordon got along together pretty well though after a few years. now gordon doesn't challenge anyone that people are passionate about. sorry jj. <g> don't worry about gordon though...he's coming back. i've no doubt he wants to show 5-time that he's not done with winning races and championship(s) yet.

as an earnhardt fan, i didn't see him as a challenger. but i loved to pull the chain of the gordon fans who thought he was!:D

I've actually became somewhat of a fan in recent years. He seems more humble now than he did was he was the God of Nascar.

i guess that's where i gave jeffy a pass. i never thought he came off as overly arrogant. alot of that was the pr training that jeff was kind of the pioneer for. but never forget how young and uneducated jeff was at the time he was so successful.

holy spit! i'm defending the boy!!!

besides his most obnoxious fans, the only thing that really irritated me was when all of jeff's interviews included talking about his faith in god.

and don't get me wrong. cause i'm not looking to argue with god....

but it just seemed so phony. no mention of the subject til...til...til....

the trophy queen, brooke, showed up!!!

Blasphemy!!!

whatever!!!! hell, i drank coor's light trying to get in the prom queen's panties. that's worse than what jeffy went through!!!

so..............

it was never jeff gordon i didn't like. but.......

i worked with a guy........

and i was a senior fan......

and i been a nascar (1972) fan and a racing (1967) fan since i quit wearing diapers....

and he had had the upper had for awhile, but....

when he started cheering on that fateful daytona afternoon, and not because his driver was going to win..............i knew i hated him. and nothing would ever change that.

cause that ain't racing. or what i really mean is that ain't racing fans.

jmo: you don't sing and dance until you know a racer is ok.

maybe that knowledge comes from attending your local short track weekly. where you actually know the racers and their families. whatever.

from my perspective, it's never been about jeff gordon's skills.

but some of the fans he drew to the sport....

and that brings us back to kyle busch...

:D

Actually, that's exactly what I didn't like about Jeff. I actually blame him and that high level of PR training for what I blame the "vanilla" blandness that so many drivers have become today. The sponsor friendly, super corporate image that he ushered in is what got me so bad.

But, like a lot of others, I too have turned around and started to like ol' Jeff a bit. He's a lot more about speaking what's on his mind now, and comes across as a lot more honest and outspoken lately. guess when you've been around long enough, that'll happen.

Yeah Jeff and Tony have kind of switched places. Now Jeff says what he's thinking a little more and Tony just puts on the fake smile and keeps his mouth shut....well usually anyway lol

I think there are areas where Jeff is still VERY disliked. I live in WV, and most Nascar fans here still can't stand him. But like so many they can't swallow the fact that once he started winning championships, Dale Sr. stopped. It is just the way the Nascar world works.

I have been a Jeff fan from the day I started watching Nascar when I was 12 years old on. I would LOVE to see him get one more cup...

On a side note, it really burns my biscuit that if it was not for the chase, he would be a 6 time champ..but that is a side note! lol

Drivers who once used to be real dominate, or arrogant, or a challenge to your favorite driver used to be the hated drivers. I really could not stand Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace, but towards the end of their careers I cheered for them because they were legends. I am not cheering for Jeff, but I also do not cheer against him in this later part of his career.

Earnhardt was a big reason as has been stated. Another thing that got to people was how emotional he was. Seemed that he cried after every win and then for the first two or three titles. I've been following him since he was in midgets racing against top dogs in USAC. I was really surprised that he chose NASCAR over the open wheeled cars. When he did jump to NASCAR, he chose to drive a Ford for Bill Davis. Many of those Ford and Davis fans thought Jeff jumped to Cup way too early and took a disliking to him for the jump. Jeffy has never been my top dog, but I've always silently rooted for him. Its hard to believe that he's almost 40! I do want to see him win a couple or more championships.

Damn almost 40, I didn't like him when he came up, I used to love it when Sr would call him Kid. But you know if it wasn't for Sr. kind of taking him under his wing so to speak, I don't think Jeffy would be the racer he is today.

I can't remember the last time I threw a cold beer at Jeffy.
