JEFF'S MOM Jeff Gordon thought a little bit before answering: Was his mother more excited about her son's success or her impending grandchild?
"That's a good question," Gordon said. "I think she'd be torn about that but more on the grandchild side."
Gordon and his wife, Ingrid, are expecting their first child this summer.
Since 2005, Darlington Raceway has meant Mother's Day weekend for NASCAR. After years of taking the week off, Darlington's Saturday night race has become a can't miss event for the region. It's become a can't miss race for many NASCAR moms, too.
The track starts with the unique call, "Sons and gentleman, start your engines."
Gordon's mother, Carol Bickford, attended the race. She thinks her son will be a wonderful father. Jeff thinks he understands what's ahead in raising a child, Bickford said, but will have his hands full when the baby arrives.
Gordon plans to spend Sunday with his mother and wife. "I've got the best mom," he said. "Very seldom do we get the time to talk about life away from racing."
