Jeremy Mayfield

Many OTC items can give a false positive. Even poppy seeds on a bagel will showup as a false positive on a whiz test as a opiate.

I found it strange someone mentioned Edwards sponsor, Clariton, and that he had done a commercial for them. That stuff on the banned list?

Actually that poppy seed thing is an urban legend, but some over the counter meds can have elements of a banned substance and therefore are also banned, the problem is you don't always know which ones have the banned drugs in them, you ever read those ingredients list on the side of a med bottle:confused:

It is a dang shame. But our sport is much better than the stick and ball sports. Jeremy had the chance every week to "declare" OTC or prescription drugs but made a choice not to. I am subjected to random and mandatory drug testing quite often and feel as if everyone else should.

But.............I am sure all the guys and gals associated with NASCAR's substance rules
all know the no-no's from the ok's. And I am sure it was more than just aspirin or a cold pill.

Oh? You don't remember him racing his way into the chase a couple years ago with a win? Who else has been able to rattle Earnhardt's "cage"?

I'm not a Mayfield fan by any means, but I do hope it is what he says -- a combo of prescription and OTC meds.

And some of that OTC stuff has ingredients that will give a positive.

I heard that on speed earlier.

Anyone remember this? I do

In 1988, Richmond again tried to make another run in NASCAR (by securing a ride with Ken Ragan’s Ford for the Busch Clash), but NASCAR was concerned not only about Richmond’s health, but also about how he contracted AIDS in the first place. They subjected Richmond (and Richmond alone) to a drug test and several days later, NASCAR announced that Richmond was suspended indefinitely for testing positive for banned substances. Richmond was livid saying that he had not taken any banned substances and demanded another test, which he passed. NASCAR later admitted that the only substances found in the first test were the over-the-counter medications Sudafed and Advil. They also released the permanent ban, but refused to allow Richmond to drive again until he surrendered his medical records that said he had AIDS.Soon after the rumor mill began and many other NASCAR drivers were now aware of Richmond’s condition and speculation began as to how he contracted the virus.

I would like to hear what Ray Evernham has to say about this one, after all wasn't it Mayfield that outed Ray and his relationship with Erin Crocker through a nasty little contact dispute?

I hope Ray takes the high road on this one, or I for one will be very disappointed

yea, I think Ray had enough bad press over him already...... dont think he will get in on this. Sad news though...... Have no idea why or what happened, but I hope it all gets worked out. Either clear him, and his name, if it's a mistake, or he gets help........ sad day for NASCAR.
On the flip, I know hundreds, if not thousands that would give up pretty much everything, medical and otherwise to be in his shoes before this happened......

More wasted talent. :(

I like Jeremy. I think his mouth did him more career damage than his driving.

Updated: Well, here we go. NASCAR's chief of its new drug testing program has directly commented on Mayfield's assertions that allergy medication causing him to fail the random test in Richmond. What Dr. Black says is not good:

"What we have is a clear violation of policy," said Dr. Black, whose Tennessee-based Aegis Labs conducts NASCAR's random testing program. "In my many years of experience, I have never seen a violation like this due to the combination of over-the-counter or prescription products."

Black, citing NASCAR policy, declined to specify what caused Mayfield to test positive, saying it was "a drug of concern."

I've made it known I don't care much for Mayfield. He left his first wife to get a trophy wife, who is a complete airhead, after getting some success. And he's been known to throw people under the bus. If the allegations are true, then good riddance.

Speaking of girlfriends Chad's new squeeze looks a lot better than the one he was engaged to.
