Slow down, pal
Jeremy Mayfield, Kahne's Evernham Motorsports teammate, was stopped for speeding by Jackson, Mich., police Friday after leaving the track. But, unlike a couple of well-publicized traffic stops of NASCAR drivers during the past year, this one amounted to no problem.
The Jackson Citizen Patriot newspaper said the 37-year-old driver was stopped about 5:30 p.m. after an officer observed Mayfield exceeding the 25 mph speed limit on a city street, although he did not clock him.
The officer, who did not know Mayfield was a racer until the driver told him, ran a background check. He then let Mayfield, driving a black Dodge Durango with dealer license plates, go with a warning to slow down.
Evernham spokesman Denny Darnell said Mayfield was on his way to a sporting goods store after dropping off his wife at a nearby shopping mall. "It was really no big deal," Darnell said.
