Each patient must be given an opportunity during registration to restrict what information can be given out and to whom. Otherwise, hospitals can only release the patient's name, location in the hospital, and a description of the patient's general condition, using words such as fair or critical.
• Schools and sports organizations may be asked to restrict medical information about players' injuries. Those organizations cannot ask players to sign open-ended authorization forms that would allow such information to be given out indiscriminately.
