Just saw on practice that all 3 JGR cars had unapproved oil pans. They all 3 had to remove them. More Penalties?

JGR teams face penalties for oil pans: The Joe Gibbs Racing teams of #18-Kyle Busch, #11-Denny Hamlin and #20-Joey Logano all face possible penalties after an issue was discovered in inspection Friday morning at Michigan before practice began. John Darby, Cup series director, said that all three Gibbs cars had oil pans that had not been submitted for approval before competition. "We had them pull (those) off and put what we're accustomed to, what has been submitted back on their cars,'' Darby said. All three teams face possible penalties for the infraction. "Chances are great (a penalty) wouldn't involve points,'' Darby said.(Hampton Roads)(6-17-2011)

Listening to one of the shows on Sirius, some press guy reportedly said that a Nascar approved oil pan weighs about 4 to 5 pounds where the ones pulled from the Gibbs cars were in the 20 to 30 lb variety. :D

Don't know if this is true. Just passing it along.

I suspect they were looking for a way to get the nose to stick (why, I don't know because Kyle has led more laps than anyone else this year)...

From NASCAR.com:

Like many in the garage area, Kurt Busch was more than curious at what was sitting on a countertop in the NASCAR hauler.

"It's always fun to peek in and see what that is," Busch said. "They put a tag on it from what it came from and you analyze it and look at it. They leave it there for other teams to look at, feel it, touch it, and see what they've got going on. I saw the crossmember cut into the oil pan. I saw how heavy it was.

"... When you have an unapproved part like that, whether they submitted it or they didn't, it's just open for everybody to see. And if you weren't working on that internally, now we have an opportunity to do that."

So they fused a crossmember into the oilpan? how the F did the crew cheifs think that would get through inspection?

*sigh

unbelievable, coach should fire whoever was behind this for sheer stupidity.

UPDATE: Joe Gibbs Racing had unapproved- and unusually heavy - oil pans seized from its three NASCAR Sprint Cup cars Friday morning at Michigan International Speedway. Officially, the issue was that the oil pans had not been submitted for approval by NASCAR, a standard procedure for the thousands of parts and pieces on race cars. But a bigger issue ultimately might be weight. While a standard NASCAR Sprint Cup oil pan weighs about 4 pounds, the three taken off the Gibbs cars weighed an estimated 20-30 pounds apiece. Competitors contacted by SPEED.com and FOXSports.com said the heavy oil pans would allow the teams to remove weight elsewhere in the car and put it low and on the front of the car, which could provide a handling advantage, perhaps a substantial one. Officials did not penalize JGR at the track but said in a statement, "NASCAR will discuss early next week if there will be any additional penalties assessed to these three teams."(SPEED)(6-18-2011)

Sounds like a page from JJ play book, the just took it a little further

If it was from the JJ playbook, we can expect that NASCAR will say that all three pans were "cracked" and had to be confiscated and no penalty will be issued...:D
