DOVER, Del. -- Joe Gibbs Racing is negotiating to bring Chevrolet back next season and might be talking with Dale Earnhardt Jr. to come along for the ride.

No doubt, there's been plenty going on behind the scenes at Joe Gibbs Racing during the past week, and team officials have stayed tightlipped on all the swirling speculation.

From the possible signing of Earnhardt, NASCAR's hottest free agent, to overtures made by Toyota, racing team president J.D. Gibbs has plenty to consider in the next few weeks.

If Gibbs is serious about bringing Junior into the fold, well, he's not saying. JGR Racing is believed to be in the thick of the hunt to sign Earnhardt, though Gibbs said on Sunday he had not yet talked to NASCAR's most popular driver.

Earnhardt's sister, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, is handling contract talks and had set an end of June deadline to get a new deal done, if not sooner.

"For Kelley and Dale, we're just going to give them time to look at their program, and we're going to focus on our program right now to make sure we're on top of our game week in and week out," Gibbs said.

Without naming teams, Earnhardt said on Friday that he's visited some of the top teams in NASCAR. Gibbs declined to comment if JGR is one of the teams that Earnhardt visited.

But Earnhardt also said he wants to keep driving Chevys, so that certainly would give JGR every reason to stay with the manufacturer. So if Chevy stays, does that make JGR a clear frontrunner?

"To be honest, we're not far along into going into that," Gibbs said. "He's made it clear that's part of what he's looking for."

Gibbs also refused to say if he's even talked with Toyota. JGR's contract with GM is up at the end of the year, and Gibbs said they've just started the re-negotiation process.

"I can't really say much," Gibbs said. "We're in the process of just sitting down with GM last week and we have their proposal. We're going to go over that. Really, that's where we are right now, just reviewing it."

They had a few extra hours to review the proposal on Sunday if they wanted after heavy rain forced NASCAR to push back a Nextel Cup race for the third time in the past four points races. The Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway will start at noon ET Monday (FOX).

Ryan Newman and Earnhardt will start on the front row at the Monster Mile. Points leader Jeff Gordon starts sixth.

Hendrick Motorsports has won five consecutive races and nine in the past 10 Nextel Cup races.

The Car of Tomorrow will make its sixth appearance Monday in a Nextel Cup race, and it could get perhaps its toughest test yet on the concrete mile oval, high-banked track.

"I think that this car is kind of an unknown to a lot of us," Gordon said.

Almost as uncertain as where Junior will land.

"I have to tell everybody I am in discussions with to give me like three days to decipher things," he said. "I wish I could be more proactive and prompt, but I really want to think about it and make sure I'm not going to leave a base uncovered."

Should JGR sign with Toyota, that could be a deal breaker for Junior. Then again, Earnhardt also wants to keep Budweiser as his sponsor, and Gibbs was adamant again that Bud is not for them.

"Just a lot of personal reasons, a lot of issues my dad [Joe Gibbs] has, it would be hard to do it," Gibbs said. "It wouldn't work. Again, they're a great part of our sport, a great partner for us. Personally, that'd be hard to do."

Joe Gibbs Racing already has a sponsorship deal with Starter, which is owned by Nike.

JGR already fields cars for Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and J.J. Yeley, and the team is not ready to become a four-car operation in 2008.

That could be dicey for Yeley, who scored a career-best second-place finish last week in the Coca-Cola 600.

Gibbs and the JGR officials like Yeley and have invested a lot in him, and they'd desperately like for him to find success at their organization. But his contract is up at the end of the season and he could be running out of time to show results.

While Stewart and Hamlin are both in top 10 of the Chase, Yeley is 15th.

Perhaps Yeley could find a spot with Hall of Fame Racing, owned by former Dallas Cowboys greats Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. JGR has a loose affiliation with the Cowboys crew and it could send Yeley there to make room for Earnhardt.

Toyota, which has struggled this year in its rookie season in Nextel Cup racing, wants to become a major player in the stock-car scene and would love to form an association with one of the heavyweights like JGR.

"The more healthy competitors you have in the sport, the better it is," Gibbs said. "The more healthy manufacturers that you bring to the sport, I think it's good for our sport. Period. I think they're an important part of the sport."

An important part, for sure, but now all JGR might have to decide is if it's more important than signing Earnhardt.

Gibbs negotiating with Chevrolet amid Toyota speculation

DOVER, Del. - Joe Gibbs Racing is negotiating to remain a Chevrolet team, but team president J.D. Gibbs would not deny that his team has been approached by Toyota.

"We sat down last week with GM, had some long conversations," Gibbs said Sunday prior to the Autism Speaks 400. "All GM teams are up at the end of this year. So we're going through the process of working on that. There's nothing new or interesting to add to that whole deal."

JGR has been a General Motors team (starting out with Pontiac) since its inception in 1992.

"Really no comment on a lot of that [Toyota speculation] other than to say we've been with Chevrolet for a long time, and we just sat down with them recently here and [we are] going over with them talks for the future as well," Gibbs said.

When asked specifically if his team has talked with Toyota, Gibbs said:

"I can't really say for us because we're in the process of sitting down with GM ... and looking at their proposal," he said. "That's where we are now, reviewing it."

It all would be settled if JGR hires Dale Earnhardt Jr. - then JGR would have to continue to field Chevrolets.

"We're not even far along down that to go into that yet," Gibbs said.

Has he talked to Earnhardt Jr. in the last week?

"I honestly have not talked to him," Gibbs said.

But Gibbs wouldn't comment on whether Earnhardt Jr. and sister/business manager Kelley Earnhardt Elledge had visited his shop recently.

"We're just racing for a championship, giving Kelley and Dale time to look at their program," Gibbs said.

Let's see...she's doing all the negotiating for Earnhardt, Gibbs hasn't talked to HIM, he denies if they toured the shop...JJ, start packing.

Jr needs to think about the Toyota deal though. While JGR is saying they want to renew with Chevy, things can change really quick. Right now I wouldn't jump the gun if I was Jr. I would wait it out and see what happens with the situation. I can't see Jr going to Gibbs, something tells me it's not the perfect fit.

Hendrick Motorsports, Earnhardt Jr. mull marriage
Posted: Tuesday June 5, 2007 1:59PM; Updated: Tuesday June 5, 2007 1:59PM

It could be a dream lineup of drivers at Hendrick Motorsports when the green flag drops for the Daytona 500 next February: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and ... Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Yes, in spite of various reports over the weekend that claimed that Little E -- the most coveted free agent in NASCAR history -- was close to reaching an agreement with Joe Gibbs Racing on a long-term contract, don't buy it. From what I'm hearing, the leader in the Earnhardt sweepstakes at this point is Hendrick Motorsports, the most dominant team in NASCAR over the last few years.
If this is going to happen, though, a few dominoes still need to fall. NASCAR limits the size of each race organization to four teams, and Hendrick currently has four drivers under contract through the 2008 season: Gordon, Johnson, Kyle Busch and Casey Mears. But Hendrick could farm out of one his drivers to a place like Ginn Racing, which already leases its motors from Hendrick.
Last Friday afternoon at Dover, Earnhardt strolled into the infield media center and held court for about 15 minutes. "I don't particularly want to be in this situation," he said. "But I'm trying to make it as positive a learning experience as I can. We're trying not to comment too much on how things are going or what's going on until we can really have something to say, but I can tell you that things are positive. I've just been overwhelmed with the personalities that I've met, with the owners and the individuals working at each company. There are certainly a lot of great people out there with good morals and good values and with great attitudes about the sport and about what they want to accomplish."
When Earnhardt uttered the words "good morals" I immediately thought of Gibbs, who's a devout Christian. And so when Jeff Hammond of Fox announced during the pre-race telecast on Sunday that according to his sources, Little E was going to sign with Gibbs and that an announcement was imminent, it appeared to make sense. But then on Monday and Tuesday morning I talked to several sources, and according to them, Gibbs isn't even the frontrunner to sign Earnhardt. That distinction, from what I'm told, goes to Hendrick Motorsports.
If Junior does move to Hendrick next year, he would fit in just fine. He's friends with both Gordon and Johnson, and he already has a tight relationship with Hendrick himself. In fact, one of the most important things that Earnhardt is searching for is to have a tight bond with his new owner. His stepmother, Teresa Earnhardt, the owner of DEI, was rarely at the track and wasn't around to congratulate Junior whenever he won or console him when he had a poor finish. Earnhardt simply didn't feel appreciated by his boss. Even if you're the most popular driver in NASCAR history, it's still important to hear from your superior that you're doing a good job.
Earnhardt would get this from Hendrick, who's trackside nearly every weekend and is always in Victory Lane to give his driver's a big bear hug.
It's nowhere near a done deal that Little E will sign with Hendrick, but that's the direction he appears to be moving. Junior will likely make a decision about where he'll be racing next year by the end of the month.

I think Hendrick will farm Kyle Busch to Ginn, and Jr will drive to 5. I knew all along Hendrick had something up his sleeve. That's why you never count out HMS!;)

Ginn would be crazy to allow that. :)
Obvious behavior problem they would be getting.

I'm still just surprised that Ginn has popped up out of nowhere this season; to even be mentioning Earnhardt Jr. or Kyle Busch going there, :S.

Joe Gibbs Racing or Ginn Racing are the only options really...UNLESS Hendrick did let someone go which I doubt.

It looks like Gibbs is out of the question.

Report: Visa denies
talks with Dale Jr.

* France's passion, vision remembered

A spokesperson for Visa denied Tuesday the company is close to deal that would make it the primary sponsor for a Dale Earnhardt Jr. Nextel Cup team.

"We haven't even had conversations," J.J. Carter told the Sports Business Daily's Terry Lefton. "We are not becoming a primary sponsor or any kind of sponsor with Dale Jr. or any NASCAR driver."

Visa has been a NASCAR sponsor since 1999 and last year renewed a deal through 2011. It also has a deal with Daytona International Speedway through International Speedway Corp.

Fox Sports reported Sunday that Earnhardt Jr. was close to a deal to drive a Visa-sponsored car for the Gibbs team.

With Visa saying they aren't becoming a sponsor with Jr, that takes Gibbs out of contention for Jr. So it's Ginn or HMS, and I believe it's going to be HMS. Everything is falling in place for him to go there. Kyle Busch is tired of playing third fiddle to Gordon and Johnson. With Busch unhappy, I wouldn't be surprised if Hendrick sends him to Ginn Racing, and Jr drives the 5. I knew Hendrick had something up his sleeve!
