Johnson accepts blame for wreck: #48-Jimmie Johnson acknowledged Tuesday he was at fault for an eight-car crash at Talladega Superspeedway that scuttled at least one other driver's championship hopes. Johnson had denied responsibility immediately after Sunday's accident, which cost both himself and Mark Martin valuable ground in the race for the Nextel Cup title. After watching tape of the accident that occurred 20 laps into the race, Johnson said he realized he ran into the back of leader Elliott Sadler to start the wreck. Johnson initially claimed he was pushed into Sadler by Dale Earnhardt Jr. "I feel bad, I don't know what else I can say," Johnson said. "I started a wreck and took out a lot of good cars. That was the last thing I intended to do and I feel horrible for it. So I'm taking the responsibility. I needed to see the video to really understand what took place." Johnson was widely blamed by the other drivers in the accident, especially Sadler. "I guess he's trying to keep his streak alive -- he caused a big wreck here last year and he caused a big one again this year," Sadler snapped. "Maybe that's his way of racing here at Talladega ... try to get rid of everybody so he can win the race." Johnson said he has apologized to Sadler, and left a message for Michael Waltrip, who flipped several times during the accident. He now believes the accident was caused because he got too close to Sadler entering the first turn, causing Sadler's car to bobble. Sadler had to slow to save it, and Johnson rammed into the back of him. Earnhardt then hit Johnson, starting the chain-reaction crash. "That's the last thing in the world I wanted to do," Johnson said. "I went and spoke to Elliott immediately after the race and he knew. Even though he was upset, he apologized for saying some harsh things, but he knew what took place and that I got him loose before I actually got into him. I apologized." Johnson was also blamed for starting a 25-car accident at Talladega in April, a wreck that led Earnhardt to call him an "idiot" and create a wave of criticism about Johnson's driving style.(ESPN.com/AP)(10-4-2005)

Who Knew???

So he IS a good guy after all. Phew.

I'm glad this is all OVER!

yea...took him 'till Tuesday, what we all knew 2 mins after it happened
Maybe so, but WHAT PERSON HERE stated that Sadler got loose BEFORE Jimmie got into the back of him????????? Not a single one of you!!!! He may be the one I pull for the most, but I have LOTS of other drivers that I pull for too. :p

This doesn't change my opinon of Jimmie Johnson at all. First off, this was probably the result of his public relationsions manager. If not there, at least Hendrick Motorsports. Jimmie is without a doubt, a talented driver. It also is good for him that he is in some very good equipment. Putting all that aside, one can only make up their mind from his prior chats with the press. This is, for me, the first time that I've heard him take credit for any mistake. We can name numerious drivers who take credit for their actions way before film and video gives anyone else an idea of what is going on. Secondly, my biggest gripe with Jimmie is that he seems to believe that simply because he is in a great car, no other driver should race him when he shows his face in the mirror of said driver. Jimmie could make plenty of heads turn if he would just take credit for his mistakes. This could be the beginnig of a great future for this kid. Let's hope so.

I started alot of these negative Jimmie threads and all I can say is that I know he is a talented and capable driver, as far as him owning up when he has made a mistake, he is greatly lacking in that area.
He's so quick to point the finger at someone else. He thinks he's above everyone else and incapable of making a mistake. This is my problem with Jimmie.
I'll bet some P.R. people had a lot to do with Jimmie's acknowledgement today.
Jimmie Johnson t-shirt, replica cars, caps and other sponser-related sales could suffer. This is what I believe is the motivating factor in Jimmie's media response today.
I know he saw the same replay footage after the race that I did. I don't know why it took him so long to admit to what I saw happening on that footage.

i dont get it, so jimmie johnson wrecked some cars...SO WHAT? it isn't like no one has ever done it, he is not perfect you know..

Right-on shadow!

someone needs to dig up all the threads, news clippings etc, from when Tony spun/punted all those cars last year! >:)

Yes, I agree. Many other driver's have caused wrecks, but nobody has dodged or denied blame or fault like Jimmie.
His character lacks substance.

This is just one "I'm sorry" after the fact yet , I too believe it is a PR ploy. Lets hope that it changes his mindset some.

haven't it occured to you that he probably didn't see the replay till tuesday or something?which is what happened and also ..as jimmie said that he felt like he got pushed by the 8 car.

How could he not see video until today??? All those guys watch video almost immediately after the race or crash.

not quite!

remember kevin harvic at bristol? he didn't watched the replay.

maybe he was pissed off or maybe he didn't feel like watching it. give it some though

Maybe...but when everyone is talking about it, chances are you will watch what happened as soon as you can.

BECAUSE HE KNEW HE WAS WONG. I'm sure the pit crew saw it, and told him.

you all are just haters.

not a hater...my parents taught me not to hate people....i strongly dislike arrogant people, which is what JJ is...im glad he appologized...thats the first time he's shown me he's a man since he set foot in this sport.....ive been watchin this sport long before he arrived and i'll probably be around long after he leaves.....i may only be 26 years old but have been watching racing for about 20 years of that....i can only think of one other racer that was as arrogant has JJ is now, and that driver is DW...i sure hope JJ take a lesson from DW and softens his attitude soon.

I never said i hate him, i just dislike his attitude, he has great equipment and quite a bit of talent. Put him in a second rate ride and i think he would humble up some.

Only thing I can say is, at least he is TRYING! Unlike some drivers we can all name that are just driving around and around resting on their family's former laurels! If everyone drove like he does we would have some great races.
Betsy
Ps. He is not my favorite. I do respect his abilities.

That's not a nice thing to say about Kyle Petty. He's trying! He had a top 10 at Dover this year!

I think he was referring to the guy that drives that 8 car.

:AHHHH:

Yeah, Jr. can't drive for crap!! Not even trying. Lol!! Figures the thread about the #48 driver wrecking the field AGAIN and not taking the blame for it, turns into an anti-Jr thread. And actually praises the #48 driver!

"If everyone drove like he does we would have some great races."

the guy that drives the 8 car still has 2 more major championships than the guy who drives the 48 ;)

...yeah, but is he in the Chase?

ZING!

^ kyle what are you on about? so what if he is not on the chase..who else is not on the chase? let me see uhhhh how about dale jarret <---- has a championship under his belt and how about jeff gordon..has 4 and still not on the chase, been on the chase doesn't mean you a better driver than that person, so i dont really see what the deal is.

I was just talking trash, shadow.

People do that from time to time.

...now, pull that wad of panties outta yer butt.

I didn't say one was better than the other, that was left to the Junior fan that commented, per the usual thin-skinned 'don't-hate-mah-eight' banter.

I don't care if you hate the 8 driver.
But hate him for a reason, not because of what you think most of his fans are like. Hate him for taking out a bunch of cars at the same track........twice.

Think? Ever been to a cup race? I actually like Junior himself, at least from interviews, etc. I root against him because of his obnoxious fans.

Oh that was a good one! Granted it took you a couple of days to think it up, but good nonetheless. =)

why dont you just stay where you was at dude?

you are just flaming members here, you iether post some decent posts if not then try not to post your garbage talk please.

No. It was a statement. I found it funny. You see, unlike most 8 fans, I know people talk trash because they enjoy the sport and enjoy rooting for one driver over another. if your skin wasn't so thin, you'd probably have a lot more fun every sunday.

Because my posts don't agree with popular opinion here, is even more reason to hang around. Already there have been more than just a couple of people that have backed up things I've said. It also creates broad discussion, which I'm sure the forum Admins want. If you're looking for forum someplace where everyone's drinking the same Kool Aid you'll be looking awhile. The whole thing that makes forums go are people like me that stir conversation and make you justify your views.

My posts aren't derogatory, they're well-written (even if you don't agree with what is written), and I do my best to be fair when talking to other people.

Maybe you should start justifying your views instead of telling people who disagree to go away.

:)

Just a little FYI, as I watch "NASCAR this morning" Jimmie said he watched the replay after the 2nd wreck he was in.

And, he was NOT interviewed again. But, I'm sure that you naysayers felt that he should have sought out one of the TV personnel to set the record straight right then and there.

Never said he was interviewed again  I juust knew he wouldn't have waited 'till tuesday to watch the replay. Anyways I'm done. :D

Lest we forget Daytona qualifying race where Johnson was also involved in a controversial wreck. IMO he just has not mastered the appology process yet, all drivers make mistakes on the plate tracks, it is inevitable that they do so. With all the attention , most of it negative, from the last Dega race, maybe and this is a very slim maybe...Nascar will re-think the plate issue.

Karma at its best...

Johnson, who single handedly screwed many other drivers hopes at Talladega, finds himself losing the championship because of that very race.

These are the chase standings if you omit the Talladega pony show...

1.J.Johnson
2.T.Stewart(-53)
3.G.Biffle(-57)
4.M.Martin(-75)
5.C.Edwards(-120)
6.R.Newman(-245)
7.M.Kensteth(-271)
8.R.Wallace(-360)
9.K.Busch(-461)
10.J.Mayfield(-467)
