Jimmie Johnson embraces hate on Twitter but says some fans cross the line

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jimmie Johnson still takes a look at his Twitter timeline almost every day, even though it brings a lot of hate as he contends for a sixth Sprint Cup championship.

Johnson, who leads the Cup standings by seven points over Matt Kenseth with two races remaining in the Chase, has embraced engaging with fans — even those who hate him — over the last couple of years. He knows that if he wins the championship again — he won five straight from 2006-2010 — there will be a segment of NASCAR fans that won’t be happy.

Though he has a blue-collar background — his mom drove a school bus and his father operated heavy machinery — Johnson has a squeaky clean image and a polished, professional demeanor, which he developed as a way to attract sponsors because of the lack of family money. But that persona ended up turning off many traditional NASCAR fans.

Can I be honest here? I don't think drivers really should be that concern with Twitter. Don't they have interns or high school kids to handle social media? The drivers really should just concentrate on one thing, the next race.

Who really knows who is using a drivers account and texting, tweeting or whatever, It's like here on RF's, there is some anonymity about who is posting.

I am counting on JJ to make sure Kenseth dont win this thing. I will hate JJ if he dont win it :)

I would rather see a bowtie win it but I'm sure I'll enjoy the next two races just fine whoever wins it.

I often wonder how many celebs actually tweet. I think they pay someone to send out a few things now and then.

Let me get this straight. You are a Toyota fan but you do not want a Toyota to win the cup?

Never owned up to being a Toyota fan. Dont want to see Kenseth win a cup driving for JGR. I just dont

To each their own. I just hate to see JJ win a cup again. He is a very talented driver but I have grown tired of his reign of terror.

The others need to step it up. Hendrick has some very talented people working for him and of course theres that Chad guy

I think it's a good thing for the drivers to me engaged with their fan base, but I can understand why some (Dale Jr., in particular) don't want to be on social media. The nasty things some people say (like the article said, somebody wish cancer upon Jimmie and all of Hendrick Motorsports) are deplorable, and nobody should be subjected to that kind of hate.

Junior is smart enough to just stay away from that crap

JJ is a happy guy with a great life. Having fun with the dolts who send him hate Tweets is nothing more an an amusing afterthought to him.

That seems to be going way overboard. Hard to imagine anyone wishing that on another person.

Most keyboard warriors say the vilest things they can think of to be a Billy Badass in their own minds without fear of repercussions.

Well I may often say I dont like a certain driver but there certainly isnt any hate involved. I have noticed that most of the posters here dont seem to display the "internet badass syndrome" and that is very refreshing :)

I think you've met the reason for that, a certain Lady from the Longhorn State. :D

No to be honest I have heard about her but thats it. I try to behave myself and treat others with respect so hopefully I wont have any issues with her. :)

I got quite a beating from Reck my first day here. I thought he was a she so I didnt fight back and let him win :XXROFL:

That was just a warm welcome.

Besides, I only joke around with people I like and know won't take stuff personally. You seen like a laid back guy and fun to shoot the sh*t with.

Dont mind Chex, beneath it all he's a teddy bear. He just likes to put up a front. :D
