Could this be the scene after Homestead again?

How do you think that a fifth consecutive Jimmie Johnson title would impact the sport? Do you think that his reign so far has helped, hurt, or had any impact?

I sure admire the guy for his driving ability and accomplishments over his career BUT..... personally I'm rooting for anyone else to take this title. I've never looked at the continued dominance by one organization in any sport as a good thing, unless you're a fan of that team. There's a real good chance that he'll be the new points leader after this weekend. The two top active drivers @ New Hampshire are Denny Hamlin & Jimmie Johnson. An average finish of 8.2 & 9.0 respectively.

IMO if Jimmie Johnson comes out of this weekend with the points lead the Chase television ratings will be impacted significantly. I don't think that his dominance has done anything to help the sport. Most, but not all, fans seem to have already handed this thing to him.

disagree - most race fans will ***** and moan about whatever they think is wrong with nascar but they still tune in. not all but a great majority of them imo.

I just don't see it that way, I think JJ's reign is over...

I think it depends on how close the other drivers are to Johnson in terms of points. At Homestead last year, Johnson didn't really have to try that hard, I think he only had to stay in the top 10 and the championship was his. However, there are some good drivers coming into this Chase that'll challenge him. I think if The Chase is so close that you still can't determine a winner coming into Homestead, the viewership will go up. People want to see competition, even if Johnson wins #5, if he wins it by actually racing at the last race it'll be a plus to the sport.

However, if Johnson dominates to the point to where Homestead is a moot point, then I do see viewership drops.

To your average Nascar viewers, they just want to see a good story, a good competition. They don't care about the details of it all, they just want to see what they've seen on "Days of Thunders".

How many here remember all those ABE signs that used to pop up at the track? Dale Earnhardt probably had the most fans during his reign, but he probably also had the most anti-fans. But everyone knew how good of a driver he was. You either loved or hated the guy. I don't believe I've ever met anyone who was in the middle. So, keeping that in mind, a 5th consecutive win by JJ just might accomplish something for NASCAR, not only a new legend, but more of that love/hate relationship with the fans.

I kinda disagree with that. The problem is, even during the reign where Dale was loved (and hated), he had things to be loved and hated about. Johnson is so vanilla that he makes people just care less. Hell, the recent Kyle Busch threads have garnered more conversation than Jimmie ever did, on this and mant other racing boards.

Jimmie winning more championships = boredom.

I knew this was coming. This seems to be one of the main complaint about the new crops of drivers, that they're too vanilla, etc. Honestly I don't care because I don't watch any of the interviews, or the pre-race or post-race interviews. I just watch the race. Jimmie is from California, so he's not going to be a "good ol' boy" by any stretch of the imagination.

People need to realize that stock car racing is no longer a southern sport, it's a national sport that has tried to go international, as a result it loses some of it's Southern charms.

I don't care that much about the driver's personality, as long as he has talent and skill behind the wheel, then I'll respect him as a driver.

But you also have to remeber, that much (well, most) of NASCAR is built upon not just the racing, but the personalities of the drivers. Has been for some time now.

And like I said, Kyle Busch has garnered more converstaion thatn Jimmie did, and he won four champioships in a row. And Busch isn't a good ol' boy either.

And for the record, him not being from the south has nothing to do with for me. Hell, I'm from California (don't let the Va Dirt moniker fool you, I'm a transplant..)

I guess we sure all look at these guys differently. For me, their personality as well as their driving ability plays a huge role in what I think of a driver. Jimmie Johnson does come off as sorta bland to me which kind of makes me feel indifferent about him. Kyle Bush strikes strong emotion to both sides of the spectrum. He's definitely more of a love/hate type driver. He's a fun driver to root for or against depending on whether or not you a fan. These guys don't have to be from the south to have personalities.
